Good Ol Blighty
« on: February 05, 2013, 12:55:00 PM »
Just thinking out loud really,i wondered how you American guys view the British,we over here have the Media and hollywood to guess what life is like in the USA,on the one hand it looks dangerous, violent and down right crazy and then on the other its romantic, full of fun, eternal youth and the streets are paved with gold,i would imagine that it isn't that different from here.
We pay around 25% income tax/national insurance, then everything we buy has 20% VAT (value added tax) for Europe plus other taxes,we pay around £6 ($10)for a gallon of petrol, thats a uk gallon 8pints,we have a national health service that is free so long as you dont die in the years you have to wait for an operation, saying that it is good and if you need emergency health care you go straight in.
our country is approx 800 miles from top to bottom and would fit in Florida a couple of times, the weather is never as extreme as yours just cold wet and humid.
We cant travel anywhere unless we fly or take a ferry oh and we've got a tunnel that links us with France too,20 odd miles underground to connect us with our arch rivals.. they're great really..
we have around 65 million people living here, thats just the legals, there is many many illegals too,so we're packed in tight.
saying that its not a bad country to live in,if it was we wouldn't have most of the dregs of Europe pouring in looking for work and claiming benefits.
i guess we are now paying the price of having an empire..Its packed with history going back pre romans/vikings/celts/picts in fact to the days when we used to paint ourself s blue..yep strange race ;D

I surely don't think people here think bad of you guys , I think we had some very big disagreements around 237 years ago though ! I think if you were to look at the big picture our tax rates are probably close to the same . As far as gasoline goes , I am raising hell now because it's back up to $3.25 a us gallon . Most of the time the dangerous areas are in the metropolitan cities and close surrounding areas . There is lots of open unmolested country where everyone is as friendly as you could imagine . It is a great place to live even in the trying economic times we've had for the last seven years . So , would I move away , no .
That's not dust in your eyes ...... it's RUST !!!

Ya I agree, I know we bitch allot about politics and see allot of hatred between left and right views I still would not to move to Europe.  I work in pest control and enjoy carrying a large Bowie knife and my judge 6 shooter enjoying my right to carry a hand gun with a permit.  As far as it being dangerous, if you stick to living out in the country and avoid big cities and drugs etc it is as safe as it gets.  We like people from other countries as long as they are respectful and honest.

Do many folks have rat rods in England?

As for being dangerous in the big cities its the same here,as you know were a gun free country and only sunday night a young woman  was shot and killed 5 miles from where i live!!! work that one out!! i live in the country too.
Greybeard i dont actually remember that little altercation 237 years ago but i think we owe you one  ;)
on a different note i dont know if you all know English history but they have just dug up King Richard 111 in my local city (Leicester) and the people of Yorkshire are banging on that he was King richard of york and they want his body back...well my county have basically said F**k off and dig your own king up!! he's ours..i can see the wars of the roses starting again!! :D

Here we have a very controversy political scene. And I wont open that can of worms on this board. In private is one thing. Gas is going back up after taking a slide down and teasing us. I think depending on the region you live in the variety of things to do varies.. Where else can you live and snow ski one day and fly and enjoy a warm beach the next. As far as your car scene goes I know that OSR does a lot of coverage. And II have seen and read where a lot of great American iron has been shipped overseas. Not only GB but other parts too.

Been to your country a few times, am always amazed at the extensive history, was also amazed that times square was quiet after about 10 PM.
Lots of open country here that most don't ever see or hear about, cuz well not much goes on there that makes the national news.
Yep we've got our guns, but they don't seam to cause as much of a problem as the people that missuse them, and they would get them anyway if they were illeagle.

Yeah our history goes beyond history,as i said before to the times we was painting ourself s blue!! we have open country here too but no where near what you have, everything is green here..for good reason :(
as for guns even with a complete ban there still here,as i said earlier a young woman was shot dead last sunday by a handgun..just goes to show that banning/outlawing stuff doesn't work.

I have never been to Europe/UK but I plan on visiting with my wife since our family heritage is Scottish/Welsh. I am also a US Army Vet and love my country, I will agree that a shit storm seems to be brewing over here. I love my guns and cars and the right to own both. Maybe we can meet up sometime if we come to visit the UK chopper york.
