I had some bad luck with the rat. I have no 3rd gear.
Good news: Today I found a th400 for $75. Now just a
matter of a little grease and I'll be back on the road..Yahooooo.
-
Good deal brother get it in and give her a test run back over to Spring Hill Hooters and take those two for a ride down a dirt road... :o
-
Right on man...........
-
What a deal , most core transmissions cost $100.00 and up .
-
Started the teardown yesterday. After removing the driveshaft, crossmember & linkage. I found a bolt missing that mounts the linkage to the trans. Not knowing if this could have caused my problem, I felt I had no choise but to put it back together to see if it worked. IT DID NOT!
So back to the teardown again. Did I mention, I hate the project! :'(
-
Is Tommy comin down to help you again? What was the Tranny problem that it had last year?
-
This was a different problem. No 3rd gear. I hope to be done with it before Tommy
comes down. If not I will just go looking for bullets for the problem fixer. :'(
-
Wait a minute, you break the tranny, and wound up with the two girls?
does not sound like bad luck to me.
PS, $75. is cheap if it works.

Buying used parts is always a gamble. If it does work I'm a hero, If not
I'm a smuck. Old one is out, New one starts to go back in today. Working
alone without a lift or even a trans jack is a slow daunting job...
One of those Hooters girls actually smiled at me, I think she wants me.. :D
-
I feel yer pain, those trans's are a heavy thankless beotch. I'm hopeing it works great.
-
maybe you should enlist the help of the Hooter's girls...may not get a lot of work done but it sure would be nice watching them go after a wrench..... ;D

They wanted to help, but neither one had transmission experiance. Maybe I was
asking for too much? Anyway, I got it in and tomorrow will do the linkage, driveshaft
and all the small stuff. Then It's just a matter of finding out it doesn't work and throwing
wrenchs.....(Fingers crossed) :-\
-
Good Luck :D
-
I have my fingers crossed for you too....and if doesn't....well, go to Hooetrs and you will feel better after 10-12 cold ones...tell them it's your birthday, they will definitely make you forget the tranny problems.... :D
-
I got the unit in and bolted up to the engine today. Tomorrow will be driveshaft, linkage,
cooling lines, oil etc.
Here is an idea I came up with today that worked very well. Not having a trans jack, I
used to tie down strapes with rachets from my luggage rack to the trans housing. I was
able to raise the trans at whatever speed or level I needed. The tailshaft could be easily
raised with a small floor jack. Most builders have more resourses and skill than I do.
But just incase someone else out there is poor like me, maybe this will help...(see pic)
-
Hell yeah EZRAT that was a damn good idea...that one goes in the filing cabinet in the back of the head for future use. Thanks brother
-
Yup, that's a new one for me too. Good idea 8)
-
The Hooters girls have plenty of "transmision experience" for me.
Good job on the trans lift straps, "more than one way to skin a cat"
-
Finished up the transmission today and went for a short test drive. All seems OK.
I have all gears now and it shifts good. Tomorrow will do a little longer cruise and
hope for the best....... :D :D :D
-
Good luck ,,,,,, hope it's all good
-
Good Luck ezrat
-
With everybody else, good luck. And since I'm late to the party,
Ezerat, is she a work'n?
-
Brilliant! Very creative EzRat

NEW transmission problem:
After three runs with the new to me trans all was working and shifting well. Then
I parked it this morning. About five hours later I start to go out to a cruise night
and it wont go into any gear.
I can feel the shift detents when moving the shifter but no movment at all.
It has new fluid and filter. fluid was showing a little low this morning. After
adding fluid, now shows a little over the full line.
I'm stumped! Any ideas???
-
That sucks ... dude you are snake bit
-
I've found it's better to leave the old dirty fluid rather then change it. The new fluid is too clean and slippery, makes them retire early :'( :'(
-
Quick, before you throw away the "new" trans. check vacuum line form intake to modulator, sounds like she could be dissconected.

I am with Obama....
-
I checked the vacuum today. I don't have a gauge but I did test the vacuum
by hand and it feels strong. I thought I found a leak and fixed it but no change
in the shifting. I'm starting to think Modulator or the internal shifting pawl.
I may trade the car for a bottle of Jack Black and a pistol with one bullet.. :-\
-
Did you check it as it goes into the modulator?
you can do so with a 2 or 3 foot hose from the modulator end of the vacuum, think i'v used windsheild washer, or anything close, or you can start said car and reach under and disconect the modulator vacuum hose and hold a finger on it to see if it's getting vacuum. Keep us posted, since it did work once I think were on a good theory.
or it could be the electric fan motor :o, just kid'n
-
Well the transmission shop told me only two things will not allow it to move in any gear.
1. The filter/pickup tube dropped down. (I pulled the pan, No luck)
2. The front pump is not working. (It goes to the shop tomorrow) >:(
-
When you installed it did you bolt the torque converter onto the flywheel then slide the trans into it?

No, The TC went on the trans, then up to the engine...
-
Good job Ezerat, had to ask, any chance it didn't get "locked in".
also we have vacuum at the modulator, I think you checked that (not just from manifold)
am curious what Trans. shop said about the possibility of a modulator problem, or have you already replaced it?
Sorry for the questions, but I thought we had a good chance to save ya a few $.

The trans guy said if I had no vacuum it still would move, just not shift. He had me pull
the cooling lines while at idle and there was no fluid pumping.
Oh well, what's another $1000. Good thing my wife works two jobs... ;D
-
Sorry to here bout that, I feel your pain.
we tried.
-
:D Brought the Deathtrap home from the transmission shop today. All is
well and ready to go to the Thursday night cruise... :D
-
great, guess we should be nicer to ya now that we see what you can lift, but why did ya have to carry it home from the shop?
Also, what was the problem?

A plate broke and slid under something not allowing the upshift. I'm
trading the other trans for some lights (Pictures to follow).
-
glad to see you rollin again !!
-
Love that picture EZ ;D ;D ;D
-
Damn, awesome job........
-
Glad you are back rolling brother
