Love it , so are you going to use the old rear or go to a later model rear diff . If you use the original what are you going to do about the old style closed drive shaft ? How strong are the orginal rear ends ? Lots of questions today ;D
-
going to run the 4o merc banjo rear end. to convert to open drive you just need to buy the conversion kit. pull the torque tube off drive out a steel pin, install the new open yoke, gasket and retainer and done ( more involved in real life. lol) the banjos are pretty strong, they actually ran them in early drag cars that put down some serious power. the weak part of the rear is the axles them selves they cat twist and crack. there is a way you install 9 inch ford axles into the banjo rear end to solve the problem
-
SWEEEET !!!!! Lovin that tranny cross-member !!!!! Awesome bits in this puzzle . Great work !!!!! 8)
-
worked on the motor mounts for a few hours today

Is the front spring crossmember a purchased part or did you make it ?
-
the front cross member is a 2 inch lowering cross member from speedway
-

I'll keep that in mind. But I personally don't like cleaning up someone elses mess so out of respect for you I'll spare you from cleaning up after me. LOL! But I may hit you up for some advise from time to time. 8)

Nice work !
-
Love it!!! i want..
-
I am interested to see how you will secure the body to the frame once the entire floor pan is finished.
-
i have not decided how i am going to mount to frame yet. i will either drill through the 1x1 and bolt it directly to the frame, or make some brackets that set off the side of the frame and bolt through that. we will see how it plays out
-
Look forward to the pics of your decision.......
-
started some work on the floor. added some raised areas on the floor pans for strength and some design. on the trans tunnel i added another raised area in the center and some louvers. still more to come over the next few days

That is a sexy floor pan , seriously nice . Are you going to leave the louvers functional or block them from the underside ? I like it .
-
if it were me i would leave them open, but need to see what the owner wants to do with them
-
liking what you've done very cool
-
Hey this is Todd. I am Greg's brother from Grey Beards Customs. I really enjoyed our visit to your shop the other day. You and Greg remind me a lot of each other in your ideas and fabrication styles. You do really nice work. It was a nice to meet you. This car looks great so far. Keep up the good work and we will see you next pass through.
-
wow, that floor is simply amazing............you are very talented.

your metal work is awesome looking , that fuel tank sure looks rough , it's kinda like wiping a bugger on the Mona Lisa . Are you planning on wrapping the tank in fresh sheetmetal ?
-
no, the owner wanted to run this old boat fuel tank, since it was a big thing back in the day, so it stay the way it is, i might strip the paint off of it to make it look a little better
-
just poking a little fun your way ;D
-
wow, that is freaking awesome........
-
made a little progress on this one today. the original quarters had the fenders gas welded on, higher than normal. needless to say they did a horrible job and ruined the quarters. i tried to grind down the welds and straighten the original metal, but it was to thin and brittle. so i decided to just make new centers for the quarters. here is how they are coming out
before i got started
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6279_zps310325a2.jpg)
the old quarter center removed
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6281_zps94978576.jpg)
the new sheet metal, spent some time on the english wheel to get the crown to match the original.
first test fit, pulled it back off and did some more wheeling and shrinking on the flanged side
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6287_zpsff84302d.jpg)
started tacking it in place
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6289_zps7e351e76.jpg)
mostly welded up and ground, ran out of welding wire for the day. once i get it fully welded and ground, i will do some more metal working to finish it out
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6291_zpsbd85a8f9.jpg)
since i ran out of welding wire and had a couple more hours till close, i started on the hood. making a cardboard template
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6294_zps123a7583.jpg)
bead rolled, flange bent, and ran through the slip roll
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6295_zps73fb46ec.jpg)
some more rolling
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6296_zps67709668.jpg)
got it fitting good, still needs some finish work
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6298_zps0b67ecc0.jpg)
-
Okay , if you did that in one day , I am seriously sloooooooooowwwwww . Beautiful work .
-
I don't even know what to say........that is simply awesome work. So much talent.
-
I can't wait to see how you get that weld-to-bead transition smooth :o That's a lot of delicate grinding; please show us if you have some trick shortcuts!
-
dont worry about the grinding, i have it under control. by welding it at the body lines it helps to control warping and hides the seam more. no short cuts taken, just some patients .
got the driver quarter pretty much finished ( still need to do a little the rear area) .after all the welding and grinding i think it turned out nice, will just need a little filler right around the body lines to smooth out some of the grinding marks. then it was time to start on the wheel well.
cut the old wheel well out
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6306_zps9e710906.jpg)
the customer had already bought these wheel wells so i will use them. needed to be cut out for axle and spring clearance. i also moved the finished ends of the beads up that i had to cut through. i think it gives it a nice finished look.
then i need to add the flange back on where i cut
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6312_zpscd955017.jpg)

-
WOW that looks great
-
Golly that is awesome craftsmanship........
-
Nice work on the flange of the inner fender , should keep all the flopping out . I know that was probably the easiest part of what you have posted so far , but it's that attention to detail that makes a nice finished product . The quarter panel looks awesome also , I hope you go far in your business , you deserve it with the quality of work you produce .
-
thanks man, i just do what i can. it is amazing what you can do when care about what the finished product will look like and actually take pride in your work. lol ;)
-
got the wheel wells tacked in and then welded solid and smoothed out

Damn, very nice work there.........very nice

made more progress today. both doors need lower door skins, so i started on the passenger door today. i figured it would be best to put a full lower skin on up to the belt line. that way if you looked inside the door you could not see the weld seam.
started off by making a paper template, then transferring it to some sheet metal
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6665_zps2a7db452.jpg)
old door skin removed, all the loose rust scale removed and some black primer sprayed on
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6667_zps800636cc.jpg)
i forgot to take pics of me making the skin itself. pretty much i used the english wheel to get some crown on the panel, then ran it through the bead roller to make the lower body line. used the brake to bend the edges up. i will snap some pics of the making of the skin tomorrow when i make the driver side.
new skin clamped up
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6668_zps6b16d029.jpg)
inside edge like a factory skin
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6670_zps05d2f77a.jpg)
inside of the weld seam, cut out the inner bracing so i could get in to hammer and dolly the weld seam area
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6671_zps8f120d6d.jpg)
after some welding, grinding and hammering and dollying this is what i came out with
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6669_zps5f406da1.jpg)
-
Looks great! Ha ha, you are getting dangerously close to actually fabricating an entirely new body out of fresh sheet metal - there'll be none of the original body left!
Not having an English wheel, I use mid-80's Buick roofs for my Model A roof and door skins - perfect curvature both directions. One Buick roof will do a Model A roof and two doors!
-
Wow, that door skin is amazing........
-
ok so here are some pics i took today, since i forgot to take pics of the making of the actual door skin
once the skin was cut out of new sheet metal, i laid out some lines to show the wheeling pattern to get a crown started on the skin
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6675_zpsf481ebc0.jpg)
after some wheeling you can see some shape on the skin
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6676_zps2545b1f1.jpg)
then to get the crown in the other direction you turn the skin 90* and wheel away.
after more wheeling you can see the crown, or compound curve on the skin
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6680_zps6adb8e9d.jpg)
moved on to putting the body line on the bottom of the skin
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6681_zpsb9cc9e99.jpg)
after a run through the bead roller
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6682_zpsbe43c99b.jpg)
then broke the edges of the skin
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6684_zps6b5a7d63.jpg)
then shrank the edges to follow the crown of the skin
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6685_zps57eb4089.jpg)
-
hell yea......
-
did you weld the door skin on from the inside ?
-
no i welded it from the outside, i just didnt do much weld grinding on the inside of the door
-
You had so much access room I couldn't tell , nice weld and dolly work .
-
so i went to re skin the driver door today, when i got the old skin off there was a lot of rot and pin holes in the bottom of the door frame, so i had to make a new door bottom.
after a couple hours of bending, drilling and bead rolling i came up with this
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6689_zpsc2cfa846.jpg)
after a few more hours of cutting, welding and grinding
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6695_zps6dac309f.jpg)
had to do some steel buck rivets
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6698_zps1be29667.jpg)
pretty much all finished
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6700_zps43fff0ce.jpg)
in black primer ready for the new skin
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6701_zpsabddb423.jpg)
overall i think it turned out pretty nice
-
Pretty nice is purely an understatement, awesome work.
-
Pretty nice? Damn Mike, you are turning out some intricate pieces there. I've seen enough stuff done by the masters of the craft that I'm pretty jaded, but that level of work and complexity on such a small, unseen part is even surprising me.
-
thanks fellas, just trying to put out the highest quality work i can. eve though you wont see it i know it will be there. that means more to me than if other people know about it lol
-
Dang nice ! Can I come and be your apprentice for about a month ? Then I might have a clue how to do this stuff !
-
dang, everytime you post pics of your work, it gets more amazing........
-
Impressive ;D
-
As above..absolutely Amazing!!
-
so today i decided to make another hood for the coupe, the more i looked at the first one the more i was not happy with the way it turned out. the new one looks much better. still needs some minor work but coming along

Great metal work
~Dustin
-
Wow, nice
-
more on this one, things feel like they are going slowly but i am at the point where it is all small detail finish work the seems to take forever and not show much progress.
both new ( front ) braces installed

-
That's amazing metal work
-
some of the work i have been doing on this car lately has been not photo worthy, lots of welding and grinding on the floor pans, and sub rails. but i started working on the steering box a little today. it is a reversed corvair box, i am going to run it as cowl steering. so i have to make an extension to get the pitman arm to the out side of the body, and make the pitman arm.
here is the draft of the plan
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6967_zps4d7ceaae.jpg)
all the pieces machined, after a few hours turning handles lol
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/558641_10152350172070021_1725636208_n_zps04860769.jpg)
close up of the pitman arm i made

the mess i made

everything bolted up on the work table, there will be carrier bearing installed when the assembly is installed in the car
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/DSCN6974_zpsc5e4deb4.jpg)
-
What holds the extension onto the box output shaft?
-
when you take the pitman arm off the extension is hollow so you can put the nut and lock washer on with a socket and extension. and the end is splined to fit the box
-
cool looking work , very impressive
-
very kool neat steering arm 8)
-
i have had a few questions on how the steering out put shaft extension is held on so i snapped a few pics of it today, you can see the one end is splined to fit the splines on the box, and the other end is hollow so you can use a socket and extension to install the nut and lock washer to the end of the output shaft and hold it all together
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/photo3_zpsc6c65e8a.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/iggypop724/media/2012/photo3_zpsc6c65e8a.jpg.html)

-
That's cool Mike! Can you do the splines in-house or do you have a machine shop do it?
-
the splines are from an old cut up pitman arm, i turned it down in with a shoulder, so i could press it into the tube and have the shoulder stick above the tube to have something good to tig weld to.
-
Wow mike, great work.
-
I love seeing the stuff you fab up
-
Damn you do some nice work!
Maybe I will cut some corners and order a rolling chasis from you for my wifes rat rod when I go to start it.
-
thanks guys, Nitro if you decide you would like me to build you a chassis please let me know, you can message me on here or give me a call 513-545-2910
-
Will do.
Not sure what will be the final project. Once I know that then I will know what frame I need.
-
well this month has been hectic with all the traveling i have been doing for shows and events. so i have been in town for the past week so i figured i would try to make some big leaps on this one before i leave again lol. so here they are
made these little brackets that bolt to the fire wall that the hood latched hook to
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/image15_zps4586851e.jpeg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/iggypop724/media/2012/image15_zps4586851e.jpeg.html)
made a support plate that will help spread out the weight of the oil filter can on the fire wall, and it helps dress it up a little
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/image12_zpsd64bdae4.jpeg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/iggypop724/media/2012/image12_zpsd64bdae4.jpeg.html)
with the filter can on

then moved on to more work on the pedals/ steering. it is all going to be one unit under the dash. here is the pedal assembly with the steering box mocked up to it, you cant see the pedals in the first pic, i took them off to make it easier to get in and out of the car

bent up a tube that welds to the cowl/ door post, i will be attaching brackets to help support the steering/ pedal assembly
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/2012/image10_zps5503159b.jpeg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/iggypop724/media/2012/image10_zps5503159b.jpeg.html)
more of the supports coming together. the collar to the right with the upright will be split in half horizontally with tabs welded to it so it can be bolted together. this way the steering box bracket can be removed if need be. the collar to the left of the clamp collar is a pivot that will be part of the gas pedal (cardboard template of the pedal can be seen)

here is a close up shot of how the bracket attaches to the box, using the 3 bolt locations that hold the side cap/ adjuster on. using spacers and plate to attach the tube to. you can also see part of the pedals in this pic, still need to attach the brake pedal arm to the pivot

You are going to be a tad rusty when you get back to your shop. Eager but rusty. Offer still stands if you are in my part of I70 give me a heads up and meet for coffee. if I was not tied into a couple of photo projects I would hook up and do some driving for you.

had to make a custom brass bushing to support the steering shaft, a huge thanks to Josh Shaw for his help on a saturday afternoon machining job

then i thought it would be a good time take the old wood out of the roof and get the new wood kit in. started pulling the wood on the passenger side and noticed some cracking in the sheet metal. dug a little deeper and found a ton of led, and a lot of bad sheet metal work when it was chopped

so i figured i would start on the roof side panels and work my way back, and down. spent a few hours with the hammer and dollie and got the roof pretty straight. then, cleaned the inside the roof, and put some black paint in, and started installing the passenger side roof wood.

Looking good, great to have a flathead in that ride.

Simply amazing......

finally able to get back to this one.
started to put the visor on and the fitment was not up to par, so i had to trim the ends off and make them fit right. had to make a couple pieces for it to make it work
(http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i138/iggypop724/DSCN7457_zps25d00c5e.jpg) (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/iggypop724/media/DSCN7457_zps25d00c5e.jpg.html)

one side fitting better

and now for the fun part. the owner wanted to louver the hood, and the visor and wanted them to line up with the louvers on the decklid. easy enough. so then i remembered i had started shaping an aluminum insert for a buddys coupe that we never finished. so why not finish it and put it on this coupe and louver it to death and make them all match. so here is where i was after 2 days worth of shaping, and louvering. still needs a little fine tuning but looking good

Louver madness there, looks like you at least had some clean steel to work with,
been welding on rust stuff most of the day, hate chasing holes from the welder.
