My definition of a Rat Rod is (Low budget, homebuilt). It doesn't matter to me if it started out it's life as a washing machine or an airplane. I'm sure others have different ideas...

I like all cars, but i am not sure fiberglass covers the rat rod category in my opinion. Fiberglass just doesn't have the rust characteristics of an old body that's been setting out in the fields for 50 or 60 years.

if you are worried what others think...DON'T....why be one of the sheeple....generally rats are pasture finds, but do you think when people started building rat rods do you think they worried what the "Street Rodders" had to say? I think not!!!! If you got got a deal on a glass body go for it. These auctions on TV have caused steel car prices to sky-rocket. What most farmers around here would have given you to haul off now suddenly have a $1000.00 pile of rust you can stick your fingers through. So, I guess when I finally get to build my California Kid replica...it will be accepted by no one...oh well, I will still build and drive it. So just build your ride and enjoy it. 8)

When I was building my Yard Art, it was called many things by car guys....   I didn't care what they called it....  I call it fun! It draws attention where ever it goes.  I love sitting back and watching, hearing, and enjoying others trying to figure it out and seeing all the small details i had built into the car.
Isn't that what we are building these cars for?

I personally am a huge fan of traditional hotrods. I hate billet, LS motors, and digital anything. I consider my truck traditional: satin paintjob with a gloss accent color, painted steel wheels, looks like a lowered stock truck with a paintjob, traditional custom interior, and a warmed up V8.

Everybody calls it a ratrod, because the fad is to flat black anything you have and call it that. I don't really believe in the whole rat rod thing, in a sense. Hotrodding used to be a game of taking what you have, modifying it with what you can get your hands on, to make it what you want. Some folks want theirs to be neat as a pin, and can afford to do so and either have the skills or the money to get it done. Some folks like theirs raw, some original, or just plain over the top. Way I see it, they're still hotrods. Mine is what it is because a farmer had a 54 pickup he wanted out of his shed, I had a 350 and a 700R4 sittin in the garage, and my grandpa had a 12 bolt rearend in his shop. I built what I wanted out of what I had.

I said all that to say this. Build what you like. Let everybody call it whatever they want. You'll never be happy with your rod if you pin yourself down to building it with a set of goofy rules.

One thing about it. It won't rust out and if someone runs into it, it will not dent. Might have a big chunk of missing fender though.
Passed away on 12/16/2011. You'll be missed our friend. Godspeed.
