What a week this has been, wow
« on: August 24, 2011, 06:33:15 PM »
Not even sure where to start, so here we go........As most of ya know, i upgraded my ford charging system with a chevy 3 wire alt. Well, not really being that familiar this type of upgrade, i connected the battery post of the alt to an amp meter, then to my starter solenoid, which goes to the battery. Well beat me with a stupid stick, if an alt is putting out 14.2 volts, and you connect it to your start solenoid, which also brings the power to the inside of my truck, guess what happens? It overheats and burns shit out. I literally had to replace all of my engines electronics, coil, distributor, hei, starter solenoid, etc...running 14 volts through electronics built for 12 volts, works really good for a couple of days, then bammmmmmm, every thing goes to hell in a heart beat.....So i spent all of monday replacing my electronics. I have since realized that i need to run a wire from the alt to the actual battery, therefore the 14 volts will charge the battery and the battery will send 12 volts to all of my cars electrical system.......

Alrighty then, next and this one was even more frustrating. I had a small oil leak at the back of my engine coming from the intake manifold. So i set out to repair the leak and bought a new valley pan gasket and tore the manifold off of the engine. I know that since i am running an after market intake, i couldn't use the rubber gaskets that goes between the block and the valley pan, it needs to be silicone. So, i put silicone down, but not very thick, since i needed enough to do both sides of the gasket. After many hours of work, i finished and fired up the truck.......well piss on an electric fence to learn some sense, my silicone wasn't thick enough and i had a damn vacuum leak. Off comes the intake manifold, and i destroyed the new valley pan trying to remove it ($32.00). Back to the parts store, new gasket and two tubes of silicone, install new gasket, reinstall manifold and off to sleep to give the silicone time to dry (oh, this was day two and three). Go out this morning to finish reconnecting fuel lines, electrical stuff and reinstall the distributor.....Well guess what? The gawd damn distributor would just drop in. Took me two damn hours just to set the distributor. I finally had to take a socket and an extension and physically turn the oil pump shaft....after doing so, i was able to set the distributor.....

Took truck for a test drive, ran damn nice so far and no oil leak......Loaded truck onto trailer and am taking it to the junk yard......No, just kidding, taking it to kool deadwood nights.

Holy crap, that sounds like one of my weeks. Glad your back on the road.
Thats why I used a 1 wire alt. I don't know how to wire up those complicated ones either.
Also, Thats why I don't fix oil leaks. (and I'm lazy)

And it looks so easy,
spent all my rat time today trying to make a seat back, and knowing I have to move the steering column. You know from my past, your's is not the worst car building/repair/welding experience.
go get em @ Deadwood.
PS fun town.

Brother those are lessons we have all learned the hard way. Maybe we should do a tech tip on these items. I have time to handle that if you would like. But the silicone thing happens to everyone at least once, and once is all it takes. Money is too hard to come by these days and it is a pisser. but, as Greg said it is behind you now and you can file these in the back of the mind as HARD LESSONS LEARNED.... 8) 8) 8)
