Valve seats
« on: November 06, 2011, 12:16:08 PM »
right then i've stripped my heads off the daimler hemi and found the valve seats and valves need work, someone has lent me a hand seat cutter and i had a go with it yesterday,it cuts at 45 deg but im not certain about it,anyone else used one? im thinking that it may be best to get it done at a machine shop but it goes against the tightwad in me.

Pics? Would be nice to see what you have there.

However, if the hand seat cutter uses the valve guides to center the cutter, if the guides are good, your seats should be good. Make sure the valves have a corresponding angle so they seal well. A three (or five angle) would be better, but unless you race it, you're probably not going to know the difference. You can hand lap the seats when you're done grinding to make sure you have a good seal and enough surface area to transfer heat well.

yep its a good job really because getting certain parts are hard, the engine was designed by Edward turner of Triumph twin fame, the pistons are the same size as bonneville  pistons and are interchangeable, you can nearly allways find somethingto fit, even easier with the internet thingy ;D

Right then i've had my valves re faced the seats have been re cut and i've now fitted seals on my valve guides,i spent yesterday bolting the heads back on and setting the tappets..non hydraulic,it fired up first time and settled down to a steady tick over..my mates allways comment on how quiet the engine is,its the smoothest running V8 i've ever heard.....But it still smokes from the left bank!!!!! all i can think of now is that one or two of the bores has glazed over!! its not as bad as last year but i was expecting it to be clear of smoke!! ahh well theres allways next winter..maybe a re bore but at £500 for a set of pistons i doubt it..
