Trying to install a gas line to my shop
« on: October 20, 2012, 04:42:17 AM »
A couple years ago i had a pole barn built on my property. The building is 40x64 with 14' ceiling and the floor is completely cemented in. When i filed for my permit to put the building up, i was approved for the building, electrical and my gas line. Sadly the way things are in a smaller town, no contractor in cheyenne would sell me the plastic gas line that in needed at the time.
So i installed the electrical line and got the building and the electrical signed off on the permit.

2 weeks ago i found a company in ft. collins colorado that had no problem selling me the gas line and 2 risers. 2 weeks ago i filed for a gas line burial permit, had the ground marked before i dug and bought the gas line. While waiting for my permit, i dug the gas line hole, which is 2' deep and 53' long. I put the line in the ground and the 2 risers, then called the county about my permit i haven't received yet. Well, now their appears to be some sort of issue and the county wants to have a meeting and will NOT issue my permit. Right now i am like, what the hell, a few years ago i was approved for my gas line and now their is an issue? Winter is about to set in up here in wyoming and the last thing i really needed was to get into a battle with the county. This is a simple install and all the county needs to do is come out and check what i have done. I have the pressure gauge set up, we can slap some pressure on the line and call it good. But noooooooooo.

It's terrible. This in my opinion is an easy situation, but it appears the permit money wasn't enough. So they'll make me go to these meetings, charge me more. Then probably deny my permit. I'm half tempted just to blow off the permitting and bury the line. My luck though, I'll get caught.

From the first time to now. There has been an election and or appointment of new officals? Now is the time to have an inside person that can give you some assitance. County officals can be a bigger dick than big time. Good luck. And ya if you went ahaed and done it you know that the first snow someone would have nothing else better to do than try to bust soemone. Dont lat that be you.

I'm gonna wait and have these meetings first. See how much more of my money they need before they allow me to hook up the line.

Hell yea, the county came over to the shop and did a walk around and we did an air test on the in-ground line. It passed and they said i can bury the line. They want to test the lines i install in the shop next, that go to the heater. So once i get that installed, i should be good to go. They actually said i had a great plan, seemed like i know what i am doing and off they went. Woohoo.

yeah man! especially being voting season. just go knock on your precinct captains door.

you " i need a gas line in my shed"
PC "i need all of this guys signs out of the front yards in the neighborhood. He's my candidate's competitor."

after you dispose of all the signs.

PC "hey thanks for doing that. ya know i gotta guy thats gonna be doin some road trenching for a new sewer line. how long is that trench you need for your gas line? i can have him stop by for hundred and a half."

Went ahead and ran all the gasline inside the shop from the ground to the heater. Then my buddy tom stopped over and we mounted the heater to the rafter.......was allot more work then i ever imagined, but it's up.

Finished the electrical today. Ran the 12/3 wire from the breaker box to the heater, installed my 20 amp breaker. Then i wired in my digital thermostat. All i have left to do is install the 6" vent tubing and run it out of the shop wall and up above the roof line. Install my line connection at the gas meter. Then set up my appointment for the final inspection.........woohoo

Let us know how much gas that thing burns. I have always wanted one of those but was scared I would have a 500.00 gas bill.

By the way does that bender you have on the bench work. I bought one looks just like it from Harbor frieght and it wont bend past about a 30 deg, and it kinks the pipe :(

toasty is good , my gas bill in heavy winter months runs around $ 800.00 but that's all day long 6 days a week , but I have 6 radiant gas heaters mounted in the ceiling so yours shouldn't be to big .
