Topic: Can anyone tell me what this is?!?!

I am not very mechanically iclined. I am a body and metal work guy so transmissions are not my strong point. There is a small hole in my transmission that looks to be a perfect circle and has no screw threads. I have asked many people and even my buddy that put my engine and trany in doesnt know what to think of it. Its the transmission of a Chevy 4.3, dont really know what it is due to not being able to find serial #s. I was wondering if anyone could help identify this hole. Any knowledge is appreciated.

Is it for the speedo cable?  If so it would have a small threaded hole next to the big hole.

what side is it on? I'm assuming since it's for a 4.3, it's a 700R4 tranny?

Or a 400 tranny. My first guess is speedo
