Argument needing opinions
« on: March 15, 2012, 10:57:00 PM »
OK , I'm in the middle of making the frame for my English Ford Thames 300e van . I have used internal gusseting ( using rec box that fits snug inside the rail boxes ) and I'm fish plating . So the argument occurred like this . I showed the rail to a friend . He immediately jumped on me about grinding the welds smooth on the fish plating . I informed him about the internal gusseting and that only the fish plating welds were ground and that they had deep penetration as well . He started off on how my frame wasn't safe . So I want some opinions on this . I'm not redoing the rails , but still would like to hear what you guys have to say on this .    8)

Fish plating will help guarantee the strength of the weld on the frame, even if you ground it clean........It's amazing what a weld and fish plating can do..

He and his friend are still sending me mssgs lol  The thing is with the internal gusseting AND the fish plating that is three layers !!! And the only welds that needed / were ground down flush with the fish plates were the welds for the fish plates . Because they will be clean looking when painted . They had deep penetration so taking off a 16th or so of hump will not weaken it !!!!

Some people never buy into or believe. They are stuck with what they have been told by an unreliable sorce. I know sucks.

Sadly i run into the same argument with people....yea, you are a good welder, but it only takes a couple minutes to weld in a fish plate or a gusset.....I firmly believe in extra support.

If you have 100 % penetration and you are confident , grind it flush and pretty ' It will effectively be as thick as the metal that was being welded , and a fish plate or gusset never hurts  . Rock on !

I laugh but am sad at the same time , as the people who were saying this were also the same fools who won't gusset or fish plate lololol  :(  Oh well . I've told 3 of these 5 people to fuck off and the other 2 are long time idiots / friends  :-X My job at the labs went tits up so may put the frame away in storage for another Anglia build later and go a simpler / cheaper route on my 300e van so I can get it on the road and enjoy it  :)  I can do another rebuild later after I enjoy it for a year  :D
