Pontiac firebird 350 vs. Chevy 350
« on: December 12, 2016, 10:46:08 PM »
My 52 international project came with a 350 of a 67 firebird but I'm really considering going with a chevy 350 instead, just seems easier. What are your guys recommendations, pros and cons.

The Poncho is more unique and will probably turn more heads.

The Chevy will be easier to find performance parts for.

The Chevy is slightly smaller dimensionally which may make it easier to work around.

You have the Pontiac already and if it runs and is hooked up to a drivetrain that works, you're bucks ahead as far as making your project hit the street!!!

Those are the major considerations I would take into account with a good looking project like yours.

Cool thanks for the reply. Yes I've done tons of reader has on the subject and it seems like the chevy 350 is the way to go my thing is that I have an engine and trans lol, and is it worth making what I have work . All I have is the engine and trans, engine turns over but as far as running idk ??? Lol don't have drive train either. Would be a good time to switch if I go that route.

The Pontiac is much more expensive to get parts for, as was said, and the 350 was not a great Poncho motor. Unless you know it runs and it just matter of dropping it in, the Chev might be a better idea.  If the Pontiac is ready to drop in, and it's easy to do, do it and be driving, if not......

yes the chevy 350 is cheaper/easier to find parts for...
but i *THINK* the pontiac 350 has a longer stroke.
(yep-3.75 vs chevy 350=3.48 stroke. see here:
http://wallaceracing.com/boresizes.htm)
more stroke = more torque generally--and thats kinda
what you want for the street....

heres a good recipe using an even longer 4" stroke
instead of the stock 3.75 crank in the pontiac 350....

If I recall, everything on the Pontiac engine is on the other side, meaning a Chevy 350 starter is on the passenger side, a Pontiac starter is on the drivers side. Not a big deal until you go to swap to a different engine, wiring has to be redone.
