1986 chevy S10 steering gear box
« on: May 29, 2014, 07:20:58 AM »
I looked at the splines on this chevy gear box till I am blue in the face. I want to go from a rag joint to a u-joint. I believe the gear box is the chevy 800 series, but I'm not sure how to confirm this. I have the u-joint down to 3 sizes, 1. 13/16 - 36 2. 3/4 - 36 3. 3/4 - 30
I'm not really a chevy guy, so this one is kicking my butt.
Here is a pic of the splined input shaft:

take a 3/4 or 13/16 wrench and put over the shaft , see which on fits , then count the splines

That is a great idea on the size of the input shaft. I will do that here in just a little bit. The picture i attached shows the shaft and the splines. Since atleast a quarter of the shaft is flat, i'm confused on spline counting. I used a photo editor and cut the shaft in half, counted the splines and came up with 15. So if i were to multiply that by 2, i get 30 splines. Is that correct?

if your shaft is 3/4 by process of elimination the 30 spline sounds correct
