Title: 53 Chevy Truck
Post by: zpi28 on December 11, 2012, 08:19:23 AM
Here is one of my builds thats in the shop now. I picked up this 53 Cab on Sept. 27th, then got the frame in November. Been working on them both little at a time.
Here is the cab in tow.

Started on stripping and the chop. I took out 2 7/8" which allowed me to keep the full back window.

This is just a shot of what the cab stance will be.

Putting it back together. I wanted this to look like its been put together by hand and not on an assembly line.

Decided to keep the parallel leafs up front and just Z the frame in the front and rear.

Now im working on cutting out some fish plates and boxing in the high stress areas. Hope to have the rear mounted up before the new year and getting rolling. As for the power train I have a 402 BBC but really want to put a 455 in it. Well see.

Got my front fish plates cut out, mocked one up to get an idea how they will look. Should stiffen it up pretty good. They are made out of .250 diamond plate.

Got the fish plates on and removed the front axle so I can work on the frame easier and get the welds finished.

Pulled the leaf packs today, removed the 2nd and 3rd spring from the bottom. Going to clean and paint them, put some grease between them and reassemble with some new bushings and hardware from LMC. Hope they ride good.

I did pick up some cool WWII Oxygen tanks, kinda thinking that these could be my fuel cells?

looking great , glad to see you over here at the nation , you'll get a lot more input on your build here than over at MSR.

I really love those tanks you scored there. I can see them with the valve cut out big enough to put some headlights in, I think they would make some huge unusual looking head lights :)

What i have read is they hold about 10 gallons in them. With the 2 that will be plenty of fuel .

I met up with a member from a racing forum im on to do some parts swapping. As we are looking at this build and talking about what motor im wanting to run, his dad says that he has a 425 Caddy that he would put on me cheap. So looks like im going to pickup a truck with the motor in it next week after Christmas. I just happened to have a mini bike that he wanted for his grandson.  ;D So hopefully this will be Caddy powered.

That diamond plate sets it apart. And you think that the 2 tanks will be enough with that 455? And that 455 wont be stock either? Is that 455 the Buick style?

Im going to be picking up a 425 Cadillac motor next week. Got a great deal on it, but the 455 that I found locally is a Pontiac. Not sure if the tanks will be big enough or not till I get them modified and check the capacity.

Picked up the powerplant today. Its a 425cid Cadillac with Turbo 400. Extra bonus was some stainless swimming pool handrails in the bed. I need a piece of stainless to join my two tanks, free piece. Hope to pull the drivetrain, rear end, and steering column this week.

Got the caddy pulled out yesterday and put in the garage this morning. Now I got alot to take apart and clean up before painting the motor. Not sure what color yet? The truck is going to be Black with blue underneath and metal top. Going to hit all the high spots with some scotch brite to make the blue come through, then run some blue steelies. It will be a true blue.

What ratio of acetone to ATF?

I read a comparison test of that mix; it was better than anything at loosening rusty bolts. I think PB Blaster was a close second.
Title: Re: 53 Chevy Truck
Post by: zpi28 on January 04, 2013, 10:07:36 PM
Its 50/50 ratio. It works better than most other stuff. The following were tested and ranked according to how much torque it took to break lab rusted bolts loose.

5th - WD40
4th - PB Blaster
3rd - Liquid Wrench
2nd - Kroil- Creeps oil
1st - ATF/Acetone 50/50 blend

The ATF blend was substantially better, I will try to find the actual test numbers and post them up.

Got the rear out of the 84 truck since its complete with brakes and all. Pulled the front leaf springs , may cut them down some and use these out back.

Those front springs are heavy duty for that diesel engine, im going to get a different set. May order the speedway kit or I found some chevelle rear springs that will work good.

Ordered some MOOG springs, set the rearend with tires to see where im at with it. Also moved the grille around to get a different look. I wont really know where to set the grille until I get the cab on it.

Took the donor truck to the scrap yard today, I picked up a Argon bottle for my Mig, and another 5.3 LS long block. Also had a blowout on a backtire coming down the interstate. Good thing I am prepared with a floor jack and spare in the back.  :o

Got the Moog springs in, but it was a wheel bearing with the same part number. Going to mail it back for a refund. Decided to cut my springs and use them instead. Started putting it together but still have some more pieces to get. With proper bracing will I be good with mounting these to the axle tubes instead of on top? Going to order some brackets for the ladder bars this week from speedway. Really want to get this a roller this week or next so that I can push it in and out of the garage. Im ready to set this cab on and get my engine/trans mounted up.

Got a couple hours in the garage last night, making progress. I think im only a few hours from having this frame rolling. Going to try to set the cab on today when I finish the ladder bars. Still got to make a panhard for it too.
I put in some reinforcement bar for the ladder bar attachment place.

After finishing up the honey do list I started plugging away at the frame. I managed to get it rolling and it felt like it would never come soon enough.

Going to cut the rear section behind the diff and make it straight so I can have a bed floor that has support.

So I spun it around and set the cab on to see where I like it setting. I kinda like it more forward than back. Ive got about 10 inches to work with on placement. Set the grille for more effect.. Pushed it out for a photo op.

Dang that looks good man........are you going to run a pan hard bar with that ladder bar set up? Just curious, i usually throw one in, but not really sure if they are needed or not on ladder bar suspensions. The panhard bar just stops the axle from moving left to right, not up and down.....

Yes I am, I think it will go alot faster now except for all the little things that eat up time. I will be running a panhard this thing has alot of side to side movement. But I dont have the ladder bars tightened up either, I just put some small bolts in it to hold it so I could move the truck around. I got it pushed back into the shop and put the Caddy in it to see how im going to put the mounts in.

Those springs came off the front of the 84 Chevy 1/2 ton that I pulled this engine from. They are just temporary and yes they are very strong. Not much give on those. Id really like to get the motor mounts put in tomorrow night after work. Will see if I get some steel cut for it tomorrow.

Got the motormounts done. Now I got to get the transmission mounting bracket done.  I already have the bracket mocked up got to get a new mount. Still got to pull the rear back apart and make the final welds along with adding some backing braces to the spring mounts.

Put some square tubing a.k.a. straight edge across the front to square up the engine.

Welded the top brackets first then removed the engine to get the bottom brackets put in place and welded.

All welded up and painted.
Set the engine in and jacked up the transmission. This is how its going to set. Went ahead and tried the grille again now with the engine hoist out of the way.

Got the trans mount set in place got one hole to re-drill the it will be done. Going to get the driveshaft cut down and installed this coming week and pull the cab back off to finish the frame work.

OK the trans mount is not done yet, I put the angle gauge back on the trans and its at 8 deg. Got to get it to 5 deg and then build a driveshaft loop. That rear cross brace is going to have to come up some. I have some heavy wall square tubing that im going to cut tonight for that.

Thanks for the compliments guys, it feels good to have it mobile. I need to pull it out and put my LS motor in the 64 Chevy soon.

OK ive been on it the last 4 hours and got alot done. Lease is up this month and we have decided to move back closer to our home town. So ive only got a couple more weeks with a big garage then its working under a 5 car carport for awhile. Anyway I got my wiring harness in and its really nice every wire is labeled all the way down with text and color coded. It also has a built in 40 amp relay for a fuel pump or fan.

I already had some air shocks that i got for my Chevelle but sold the car. I decided to make them work on here. Fabricated a bracket and starting putting them on.

Then I installed my panhard and bolted in the springs. Still got to get some softer springs before I get this on the road. I could haul a 5th wheel camper with these springs on it.

Momma decided to goto bed early since I was working on the truck so I found something else to do. I got the grille mounted up. I still need to make some tiebacks to the firewall. (note to self, if you use an old leaf spring for mounting tabs remember its spring steel and it will laugh at your HSS drill bits. Must use the new Dewalt bits to drill it.) That was an awesome time there. I did use two 4 inch pieces of a leaf spring ,that I removed from the front of the truck, for the mounting tabs.

Didnt want a brake booster out in the open but I already have one that was on the cab when I got it. May paint it black and gold and install it tomorrow along with the brake pedal. Got to order my lakester headers for the caddy also. I need a stock steering box now. Got to get the steering done. Hope to get this done by late spring.

Got the gauges ready, I did manage to break the speedo hand so It will just be there to track mileage for now. I can use a GPS for speed if I need to.

Really nice progress. Love all the pics. One suggestion on your brake booster set up, take a square piece of plate steel, doesn't have to be real thick, but drill holes in it that match your booster bolts. Then place the plate on the outside firewall and the booster. I have found that these older vehicles with newer brake systems end up weaking the metal on the firewall and cause spider cracks. The piece of plate helps stabilize the cab as you press on the pedal reducing the risk of spider cracks. Just a suggestin. Is just something I do with firewall mounted boosters.

Thanks alot, I noticed when tightening the nuts on the booster that the fender wall was flexing alot. Ill get a 3/16" plate cut and put it on there. Im happy with the progress this week, hope to keep it going. Im getting new ideas every time I look at it and especially after I finish one area and step back for another look. Hope to land the harness in this week and find a steering box. Just need a stock one for a AD Chevy.

No real updates. Ive been moving for the past week to a different town. Got my kids back into a smaller school system. I did give up my nice garage for a 5 car carport now. I also rented a new 12x30 shop for storage. I have plenty of room but may have to use my dads body shop for some of the work.
I did receive my header plates from hellsgate hotrods for the cadillac motor today.

Damn I hate moving, but im finally getting settled into my new place. Today I went an picked up some really nice doors. The glass is good, the regulators are good and the vent windows work. Going to get them hung and cut soon. I also picked up a front cap and decided to change my direction on the truck some. Im going to put on the cap which will require the cab to  be moved forward about 4 inches. I have located a dana 60 dually rear that im going to look into getting. Big thing is that im back to working on the truck. And it feels good.

Been awhile, Id moved and lost my mojo. Trying to get it back so I worked on the truck some today. I got the firewall cut some more and moved the cab forward to meet the front cap. I also managed to cut through my trans dipstick tube in half during the process  :-[
Should get some cab braces cut and welded tomorrow and bolt the cab back down. I still got to figure out the steering. Hope im back on it now.

Shorted the rear of the frame some so the bed could slid forward a few inches.

I'm glad to see you back on this after such a great start. Heck, not bad progress for only 7 months into the build. I really dig the flame fish plates; I'm too lazy to do something like that! Those are interesting heims on your ladder bars; where do you get hose with no ball inside, just a hole?

They are jegster ladder bars, the front heims have balls. The rears are just holes for a dragster. Thanks for the comments. I was hoping to have it running by now. After moving i just didnt feel like touching it. I think once i figure out the steering it will go much faster on the build.

Been brain storming on the steering, got to order some 3/4 pillow block bearings, sprockets and chains. I have also decided to put my manifolds back on and run some stacks behind the cab. This will give me some needed room for my steering box. Bed is not mounted yet, just sitting there for looks..
I moved the truck out and took a couple pictures. Then parked it over by the 36. Im starting on my 64 C10 now, got to wire up the ignition and get that LS motor running.
