Electrical Issue
« on: May 04, 2011, 05:58:46 PM »
Well i had a 1 wire fire in the cab of my truck, it was a wire that was connected to the ignition switch, but didn't go anywhere. After the fire, i tried to start the truck and no spark. So i replaced the ignition switch, starter solenoid, no go......I replaced the voltage regulator, duraspark ignition module, the distributor, the coil, and still no spark. I am so fucking frustrated right now it's not funny. I can not figure out for the life of me why i have no spark. Engine turns over fine, i get plenty of fuel........I have searched and searched the internet for ideas on what to look for, but nothing is coming together. Any ideas or links to a duraspark ignition system with no spark?

I'm not an expert on wiring, but get a tester and start at the battery and follow the circuit until you have no juice. That should isolate the problem area. If it's cranking obviously you have a good battery and starter but follow it until you have nothing...

couple of questions, does dist have power with the key on? or power to it? if not ask why, then trace back (with tester) Ezrat is right in how to do it I just find it easier to go the other way. If with key on you have no power to dist, then follow back to ign. switch.
PS maybe we should ask,,,,,, what started the fire?

I'll have another look today. I think that wire used to go to the solenoid, before i wired the truck and i just didn't remove it out of my excitement of having the truck start. After replacing all of the electronics yesterday, i am going to try to just remove all the wiring from the engine and start over, maybe i am just missing something here and it wasn't obvious to me yesterday do to being frustrated......

I would not remove any wiring yet (just my opinion) The truck did run, I would use it to trace the problem, unless it's to burnt. If to burnt I would look at it first to trace problem. Sounds so far like wire from key to dist shorted out. I do have a recently used fire extinguisher if ya want, would need to be re-filled. Again, Just me tell us more when ya find out.

I only burnt one wire and it wasn't connected to anything but the ignition switch. NO other wires were lost in this. You are probably right, i will just go back to the basics and start from the coil and work my way back.

Wire from switch (hot) that did not go anywhere? may have found somewhere to go(grounded out). Non fused would have made a bad bad.

Well i spent 5  more hours on it today and no go........I just can not get spark. All of the electronics are new, so what ever may have been damaged should be gone. I replaced the ignition switch, starter solenoid, voltage regulator, duraspark module, distributor, coil, installed a ballast resistor to the coil, etc......I am seriously stumped here. I am pretty damn good with electrical, but this one has gotten me. I have graveyards this week now, so i will have sometime away from the truck to take a mental break....

On your ignition switch you should have a dedicated ign wire, if you are connected to the acc lead power is lost to the ign and it will not fire. perhaps that is the loose wire that burned. good luck

I don't have my camera with me, but I ran a wire from the fuse box (coil wire) to the coil (+), i then ran a wire from the (+) of the coil back to the starter solenoid (I). From the (s) side of the started solenoid to the IGN side of the switch. I have a battery wire running to the BAT side of the ignition switch. I then have an accessory wire for lights and stuff connected to the ACC side of the switch. From the duraspark module, I have the red wire going to the IGN side of the ignition, The white wire running to the (S) side of the starter solenoid switch, the green wire going to the (-) side of the coil, Blue and Orange wires going to the distributor and the black wire going to the distributor.

From that information, shouldn't it spark? Thanks for the help

You should have no wire going to the starter solenoid from the dist unless you are running points. If you are running points the wire should go to the + side of the coil. If you are running electronic the coil should have 12 v pos to the + side of the coil with red wire from dist to + and black to -

That cool that you got that electrical gremlin squashed. I hate electrical troubles, because they can be some of the simplest things that you look over ten times and then BAM, the light comes on!
