Motor oil questions
« on: March 15, 2015, 07:59:46 AM »
Am getting ready to fire the 302 up and wanna pick y'alls brains. The 302 is built to the tight standards of modern engines.
I was told that all I'm paying for is the name and purple die in Royal Purple. What oil is recommended? Full synthetic ? Regular oil ? It's not gonna be a 1/4 mile hero but more of a daily/weekend driver. 5w20 is what Ford said to use in the F150 Figured I'd use the same weight in it again.
Got 9.8 to 1 pistons that are coated(forgot what they called it)
Thumper cam/Gear drive stock style valve train(for now)
2-4 barrel high rise intake
GM style HEI ignition
Thanks Boog out

I don't know about the dye statement. But I have been using Royal Purple  in Blue since day 1. And that was with the well used 283. And with the healthy 350 she seems to like it.

Flat tappet cam = make sure you put ZDDP zinc in the oil!  They've taken zinc  out of modern oils because it plugs catalytic converters. But flat tappet motors need it, especially during break-in. I use Lucas Break-in Additive or STP has a zinc additive also. Valvoline VR1 Racing Oil is the only parts-store oil that has adequate zinc.
