My rearend is too wide!
« on: July 25, 2011, 09:16:45 AM »
I don't have my rearend yet, but whatever I get is probably going to be too wide.  Who here knows how I can narrow whatever I end up with w/o spending the money to have it all done for me? I have a cut-off saw, a MIG welder, and a fairly well set up shop. What can I do myself and what should I have done for me?

Thanks!
Chris

I guess it will depend on which your axle you choose some are easier than others , like a 9" if it only needs to be a little narrower you can shorten  the long axle side and get another short axle shaft from the junkyard and by doing this it will center the differential and narrow the housing by about 2-3 inches . There are lots of options available
That's not dust in your eyes ...... it's RUST !!!

But I like donuts!

Once again it comes down to what body I'm going to use. I guess I need to concentrate on that. I like the 9" idea.... having to do only one side.

Thanks!
Chris

If you want to go a little more high tech you could always use independent rear suspension
Here's a good article on the subject and a video:

I done did go higher tech... My brother had a '75 Jag that he parted out. I got the IRS and IFS out of it! Narrowing the rear isn't so hard it seems, but the front is beyond my skill level, so I'm guessing there will be no narrowing of either end.

Thanks for the article & video... I learned something!

Chris, Do you have a pictures of the front-end that you are trying to narrow? Maybe someone here can figure something out.

I don't think I want to narrow it... I like 'em wide. I may end up narrowing the rear so I can run some wides on there... we'll see. I need to get  a body located.

I went with a Ford 9" , was going to narrow it but decided to leave it wide and purchas rims with a heavy reverse offset, have not ordered them yet but have seem them used by a friend and they worked great on his project.
