27? roaster
« on: June 20, 2011, 11:45:51 AM »
OK, here goes. I got this project and saw some potential. Really like old trucks, but wanted a roaster, so here's the deal. Fiberglass body, nice frame, and it turns out, stuck motor. photo of the start before I tear into it, and tear down.

Hey that gonna be cool. I'm lost if I don't have a project of some kind going.

Hope the stuck engine isn't a big deal.

I believe the "nation's" web problems were probably caused by my running a build using  a fiberglass body, sorry, but should be a fun little driver, rat or not. Pulled body off to rework triangulated four link and replace shock and spring with coil overs, cuz I want more room. was also designed with gas tank in the passenger area, behind seat, so that will move. This is a short wheelbase car and had the steering column running down between the gas and brake pedals so that will change just for ease of driving. body supports being glassed in now, this should go along pretty well. Thinking two doors that open, different wheels, steel, or big chrome mags, possible top, and maybe full hood. This years color Rudy brown primer.

Fiberglass is cool with me....Steel is too costly nowadays...I am looking for a deal on a 34 Ford body....gonna build a California Kid replica one day, that car turned me on to hot rods

Here goes, cleaned up the rear end mounting, and new it would be a tight fit, but because space is at a premium, wanted to put the fuel tank back there. Problem, fit to tight, with about an inch of clearance, so have to cut frame, and drop it down following the body line.
Also, because you wanted it, a picture of my body. :D

Thank you, got the motor to turn over, thanx to lots of "PB blaster" and a grown up wrench. then had it running for about 2 seconds, so I'm calling it go to go.
Problem is, the car won't be a "show car", I'm gonna drive it,
won't be a "rat" not gonna even pretend, fiberglass body,
so guess I'm really just turn'n wrenches for the fun of it, which is cool with me.

Don't get to down on the car because it's glass. It can still be a
rad ride. They had glass in the 60's so it's period correct as far
as i'm concerned. Glad ya got the engine going, all easy from
here on........

Nothing wrong with glass for a rod....next time you have a motor in that condition try Sea Foam in the cylinders, I have found it works faster than PB Blaster, plus what ever is left in the can you can pour in the daily driver's gas tank ;D

Thanx for the tip, and the nice words.
yesterday I welded the rear upper shock mounts in real good.
Three times!
(each time in the wrong spot, or would not provide clearance)
if I was drunk, and I was not, at least I'd have an explanation for why. Guess we all have days like that.

Just an up date, picked up a steering column that was 38 inches long, is now 27 3/4 inches. as I am working around a glass body I put plywood on the inside of the firewall them a light steel plate so I had some thing to bolt to, the weird mounting plate on the column fits snug into a bracket on that plate. this plus mounting to the bar supporting the dash holds the column into place, without anything but the shaft through the dash.
second picture shows the stringers added to the inside of the body with insulation, as a sound deadner in between plywood over the top for interior, if'n I get that far.

For those of you following along,
Next photo is of the inside of a door hinge, nothing real good to attach to, so another small steel plate is welded to the inside for a solid door hinge, (at least on the body side)
Then a shot of the extra holes in the firewall, that can now be filled in, as well as the transmission tunnel, and a cutout for the distributor (odd shape because were gonna have to mount a gas pedal in here and it's already a tight fit.

Cheerrio Mates,
(notice we done got a lot o gals, n guys from udder countries, this means "hello")
Just got myself a new camera, so will try to keep the pictures coming. Ezerat, I just had to try the door hinge thing, but they ain't easy to install, probably the reason you don't see many on a "glass" ride. also explains why I don't recall ever seeing one with a chopped top. With the top up, the doors will have to open to be able to crawl in, also may need a good "yoga instructor"

Just a quick update, working on the body, this was an old hot rod some time ago, so lots of nicks, scratches, and cracks. Couple of notes: "peal and stick" gutter seal tape is aluminum on one side and sticky on the other and works great for insulation, and is cheaper than the hot rod stuff ($16.00 for a 6"x25' roll) available at "Lowes". I have also added some cut up car window sun screen material to further insulate, not for the heat but for the sound, and comfort factor.
If you attach fiberglass to steel it will crack because it expands at a different rate, so you attach to wood, then attach the wood to steel.
Fiberglass dries and get real hard when it does, but when you take a grinder to it you can wind up with a lot more work to do.
There is a reason you see these bodies with a very thick paint on them, it's covering up the bad body work.
