Headers: Ceramic coating or header wrap?
« on: July 02, 2014, 01:42:03 AM »
My headers are bare steel. They are starting to melt wiring, horn etc - even several inches away.  So I need to either:

1) have them ceramic coated, or

2) wrap them in header wrap.

What do you guys think?

I don't have an answer for you there except to drive faster to blow the heat off !! Just kidding , I wrapped a set and it really holds the heat in so much so that when you shut the engine off you could hear the pipes crackle and pop from the heat as they were cooling .
That's not dust in your eyes ...... it's RUST !!!

That is a tough one. Alternative would be to build a second set and send them off. But on the other hand warp would be the most time saving. My Jeggs order just came in, yep warp. To much of a hassle to pull mine off and re-install.

Wrapping is the only way to cool things down. My twin turbo set up on my mustang has all the piping ceramic coated and it was still melting everything, so i ended up wrapping all the piping.

I'm having trouble figuring out how you have an overheat problem with an engine and headers out in the wind- could this be related to your overheating problem?

Good question. I've been wondering the same thing. Are the exhaust gas temps just really, really high?

I like the looks of the wrap. Looks like a mummy.

I did wrap and I saw a cool trick to keep it looking clean.

A guy showed me red copper high heat silicone for gasket surfaces. He spread it on the header and started the wrap then he held it in place with just a regular hose clamp. Dabbed along the header every few inches until the collector. On the collector he put more on and wrapped it again holding in place with a clamp from a cv joint boot.

When it dried he removed the hose clamp and all that was left was the cv clamp so tight to the collector you'd swear there was no clamp at all.

Just be careful putting on too much silicone.

Looked clean and no ugly clamps to cut your hands on when changing your plugs lol.

Not trying to hijack this post but I'd like to see some  :opics./stats of that twin turbo mustang. I'll bet it's real monster!
