« on: April 13, 2014, 08:08:29 PM »
Truck was overheating some so changed water pump took out thermostat etc for warm weather
.....I also cleaned out the cooling system and added 2 gal of distilled water a bottle of water wetter and maybe 1/2 gallon of 50/59 mix.....only to find out the forecast changed to mid to low 20s overnight one night this week......should I be concerned?

That's a hard one to call. Sometimes a vehicle can make it through a brief cold snap if it has good freeze plugs and the cooling system is in good shape. No matter what, you should really try to get some anti freeze in your system........

Takes a pretty sustained hard freeze to damage an engine. If you don't have antifreeze just lay a light bulb on the engine (incandescent bulb of course - not one of those crappy spiral bulbs).

It does have a small amount of antifreeze probably less than a half gallon....I will test it this evening and see what it says it will handle......if not I may use the light idea

A light would dang sure work. Just need enough heat to keep the chill off of things.

My bro in law has a 7.3 ford ( diesel) and lives in indiana. His heater block cord got ripped and he used heating pad, like the kind you put in bed, for almost two weeks last winter. Worked good he said.
If you dont like what I am doing with my ride... buy it and do it yourself..

First year I have had the truck.......not sure I just know at idle it was going towards the hot side on a 70° day...everything seems to be in order I flushed the system and put a new water pump in....may reinstall the thermostat I'm tired of waiting for it to warm up

Does it actually overheat or does the guage just show it is? Sitting idling it may not move enouph air through the radiator. Does it have a shroud? May need one. Just guessing, you may have checked it out already

Lol yea I think I will end up doing the shroud was hoping it would cool at 70 with the original equipment though......I will probably end up building a shroud before it gets real hot
