First full engine build?
« on: March 28, 2013, 07:22:34 PM »
I really want to do a full rebuild but I want to do a flathead V-8. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what to look for as for difficulty and looking for parts

Speedway is a good source for flathead parts

It can get deep in your pockets. Definitely look for a Mercury, but if you can't find you can always by a scat crank. I would say 90% are gonna be froze and if you don't break a couple of head bolts you got lucky. My Dad did alotta port and polishing on my block so freebie there. Then I had a local machine shop build my short block. Big shocker for me was $300 main bearings final from the machine shop was $1700. If you run stock heads and intake you save alot like with any motor. I bought Navarro Heads and Intake from http://www.flatheads-forever.com/ that set me back another $1100. Now if like me you have to run Stromberg 97's rebuildable ones run bout $100 each new ones from Edelbrock $400. I was told stay away from the Speedway 97's. I bought used ones. Theres also the option of a 4 barrel may be a little cheaper not sure what the intake runs. That's a rough idea then you may buy one that runs. My Dad gave for $400 for a complete motor and trans with radiator and run-in stand. Some people are just lucky. Here's my build on the site http://www.ratrodnation.com/forum/rat-rod-builds/hoping-to-find-28-31-tudor-while-i'm-building-my-motor/

There are also some really good books, but this is the best I've found http://www.flatheadv8.org/jwlfacts.htm
