Remove Primer Spray Paint

I'm building a 63 f100 and the previous owner got a little crazy with a can of white primer spray paint on the hood (just spots).  I want to sand down the primer to get to the original paint underneath.  Could I use my orbital sander with 220 or 320 paper?  Should I use some sort of compound?

I bought a cleaner from Dollar General called Total Assume or something like that. It's a yellow spray bottle. Sprayed it on and let it soak then pressure washed it. some places took 2 or 3 tries. Worked well on my Josh's 1951 Chevrolet.

If you're patient, you can scrub off primer with laquer thinner.  Use a clean rag and pour some thinner onto the rag. Not dripping or soaking, just good and wet. You can rub briskly and the primer will gradually dissolve and collect in the rag.  It's a little risky, but I've seen it done and done it myself.  Just be patient and work it a little at a time.

cool. I'm gonna try lacquer thinner on a rag first and see how it comes off.  I was able to use lacquer thinner on the emblems to get the primer off over the weekend, so I'm guessing with some patience it'll work on the truck too.  Thanks for the input.

Start out light!!  Try a place that doesn't show if you can!!
