for some reason I have started to build a 1933 / 34 roadster .I just picked up the front axle . the question is is it a car or truck axle and how do I tell . I no it is a chevy

I have a '56 Ford in the shop right now. I haven't been under it, but with the exception of a badly engineered power steering application, it is original. If nobody else jumps in with an answer, I will let you know as soon as I can get it on the lift and look at it.

that would be great , I found one on the web that looked like that . I was told it was a chevy but I don't believe that is the case . could you let me no if the steering rod is in the front or the rear

The tie rod is behind the axle. This is the link that connects the two spindles .

that is what I thought that would mean a cross steer on it . speedway has the disc brake set up for it if infact it is a 56 front end

'56 Ford is a drag link set up. The steering box is mounted some distance behind the axle and a link runs from the pitman arm on the box forward to the left spindle. A cross steer, like an old '48 Ford car, has the box located over the axle and the steering link runs from the pitman arm across the chassis to a second attaching point on the right spindle.

Lockjaw uses a converted '48 Ford front end that I adapted to a trailing drag link with an adapter arm from Speedway.

I'm taking the day off today. I've worked all day, every day, for the last week and a half and I really need to take a break! I have Lockjaw and the '56 pickup out in the shop. I'll try to take pics of both of them sometime tomorrow and post them here.

I thought that I sent you pics of the '56 Ford front end, but I don't see them here! Perhaps it was on the other thread? Anyhow!! Here are a couple of shots of that front end and a few of the steering I put on Lockjaw. I hope this helps!! The steering on Lockjaw is smooth, light, and responsive!! It drives like it has power steering and it DOESN'T wander!!

thanks that is the axle I have I am going to order the disc from speed way . On the front axle I went with the 1/4 eliptic springs

There are a couple of arms available from Speedway if you need one for linkage to the steering box. I highly recommend the Corvair steering box for this kind of application! They're fairly inexpensive, easily adaptable, there's plenty of repair/replacement parts, they are very compact, and you can get a mounting kit for your frame from almost any supplier of T-bucket kits.

are you using the ball on the axle or did you change that , looks like 2 front ends

The first and second pictures are of the '56 Ford axle.

I included the pictures of my modifications to the '48 Ford front end I put together for Lockjaw. There are photos of the Corvair steering box, the drag link and the arm I bought to convert the '48 from cross steer to the longitudinal drag link.

I also included pictures of the shock towers and the spring mounts that I adapted to the split wishbone arms.

If you can make it work, the arm on your left spindle assembly will function fine. Just adapt the drag link end from the truck to your drag link at the adjustment sleeve. You MAY be able to use the entire original truck link. Just lengthen the adjuster sleeve as needed.

Blackwater what did you do with the spindle stops after you put the disc brake on I see the new stops . My stop is the bolt that holds the spindle in place
