scary moment
« on: April 24, 2014, 04:49:09 PM »
Was cruising with MsDee and stopped got fuel(for us and boog bug) ;D pulled outta station and told Dee that steering felt funny(too much play) pulled into a lot to turn around and SPIN :o no steering!
Looked underneath at steering looked good then started up the steering shaft to the extention and waalaa the bolt was gone! Used locking nuts so i must have sheered it. My PSA for this cruising season Check your steering! Gonna put grade 8 bolts in mine and look at it when i check fluids THANK YOU GUARDIAN ANGEL Promise I'll not make you fly so fast ;D
life is a ride where you slide into heaven sideways on 4 flats blown motor saying Thank you God what a ride!!!!!

Too close brother. I have been going through Ol Blue the past couple of weeks and checking all to make sure that she is ready for the "Cruizen" Season.

Glad you two are safe.
And timely advice since another member here was asking about welding steering shafts together.

Harrowing experience and amazing luck. I remember the episode of American Hot Rod where Jerry Dixey lost his steering on the freeway and coasted into the median    :o

Sure you didn't forget to put it in to begin with? Haha. Good thing it wasn't at a fast speed. Maybe just weld the shaft instead?

Heck yeah - maybe even AN grade (aircraft) AND weld?

I am also involved in ultralight planes so I have lots of aircraft hardware around the shop. Different size rod ends were required for opposite ends of the drag link so it couldn't be threaded. Instead, I welded the ends in and installed AN through-bolts for redundancy. If one breaks, the other will still hold!

thought about welding it but it has a plastic sleeve inside for it to slide in case of accident

Wow, that is scary. Good thing you were aware of your rides normal behavior.
Love building rat rods, driving mustangs, and building websites.
