~ BLACK DIAMOND ~
« on: June 04, 2011, 12:38:03 PM »
This is a build that we recently finished . It is a '36 Dodge truck built in " bobber " fashion . This truck belongs to my brother Todd . The pictures will start from the begining when we bought the truck from another fellow that lost interest . He had purchased a number of high quality parts for the build , when we got the truck it was only mocked up . This was a thirteen month build from start to finish .

This is the truck as we got it

There were a few things about the truck we didn't care for namely the length of the bed , I like a short box but this was a little to short for me . The bed that came with the truck is 38" long and 48" wide , seemed out of proportioned and a little short . Also with the cab being chopped and heavily channelled there was not enough room for a full size man , so we made the decision to lengthen the cowl 6" by moving the firewall forward . So if we lengthen the bed and the cowl that leaves no choice but to stretch the frame .
Step one - Blow it apart to start the build

In the end I lengthened the frame 11" to account for the longer bed and cowl , I used 8g steel for the extention .

We set the cab back on to check everything then we cut the firewall out and set the cab back on again .

We mocked it all up to make sure it would have the right look lengthened

The floor pan was pretty rough so I made a template and cut a new pan out of one piece of 18g sheetmetal

As soon as I welded in the new floor I wiped it down with some thinner and the humidity was so high it was completely rusted the next morning

It is amazing how much work goes into something that no one ever sees . like after I added the cowl extension there were no braces going to the firewall so we built these

Next I fabbed up some kick panels

Then I formed some A pillar covers to help blend it all together

Now on to something new - It's time to build a bed !

The bed dimensions ended up at 48" x 48" . We used 1" emt conduit for the rolled edges on the bed rail and across the top of the tailgate - Worked great !

Look'n good, thanx fur posting the photos. Recently bought a "half done" project myself, amazing how much work can go into them, and to think, it looked ok when I picked it up. Same as you, body off, fix frame, ect.

It's funny how you think .... This will be a quick easy build ! I have finished this project completely now and it took around 13 months but it was a complete build not a makeover

Thanks for the praise Hotwheels ! That means alot to me . Some people are very limited to the rat rod only or street rod only way of doing things , this build is neither it's just a fun hot rod with a little bit of both sprinkled in .  :D

Let the assembly begin : I sprayed the frame with a gloss black uerethane , and got all the front and rear suspension hung . We went with stainless hair pins front and rear .
