Scarey stuff today
« on: July 26, 2013, 11:52:38 PM »
Every part of the country has its disasters. Florida has hurricanes, California has earthquakes and Oklahoma has tornadoes. For us here in Oregon it's forest fires. Last night a thunderstorm rolled through, but in the AM everything looked okay so we assumed we'd escaped. But by afternoon all hell broke loose. A total of 54 separate forest fires broke out, four of them within sight of my house. Retardant bombers filled the skies all day trying to stop the fires from spreading toward town. The stuff that looks like clouds is the entire sky filled with smoke up to about 20,000 feet. One good shot of a bomber dumping it's load on a spot fire that crested the hill from the main fire behind.

When this happens we can often expect to live in a pall of smoke for the remainder of summer until the rains put the fires out in October  :(

Colorado is on the same level as you. No matter how much snow they get on the ground you can always count on several fires. Growing up in Colorado we never had to worry about forest fires or tornados, now..........WTF?

Yes, very close. Mandatory evacuations just one mile up the road and we are on standby evacuation notice. The one closest to my house jumped from 500 acres yesterday to 5000 acres today. You can actually feel the heat from the fires.

More pics from today.

Thanks guys. The governor has declared us a disaster area. The number of firefighters in my town is double the town's population and the National Guard is being called in.  Today was horrible; smoke so thick that you couldn't see across the street, all stores in the city sold out of filter masks. All outdoor events are cancelled due to hazardous air.  Here is a pic of my neighborhood today:

Thinking somebody should call the EPA, tell em' there is an illegal burn going on.
Best of luck to ya,  I was going to ask if you were packing, then thought that would be bad to broadcast that across the globe. I am guessing there is nothing the Nation can do to help, if there is let us know, your in our thoughts.

Thanks for the good wishes. I'm hoping this gets tolerable in time for the Cow Creek Jalopy Jam, August 11th.

I will be there in thought only, going to Bonneville this year, may not be as hot out on the salt as it is at your house.

Refugees from the fires.

Two friends have taken in "refugee" classic cars from friends who are in the mandatory evacuation areas. This pair of '36 Fords (a Model A coupe wouldn't start and was left in the danger zone) and a '40 Ford convertible are among those vehicles fleeing the flames.

Our Governor is here today, so everything will be okay now. Politicians can fix anything   ::)
