life is a ride where you slide into heaven sideways on 4 flats blown motor saying Thank you God what a ride!!!!!

Why the tie? police?does not seem likely, maybe taking a load to town to sell? ,maybe, any other guesses?

Back in those days a gentleman didn't go out in public without a tie. A vest was also expected. Every man, regardless of caste tried to present himself as a gentleman. If you look at pictures of soup lines in the depression era, most men STILL wore ties!

 :P :P I'd have never survived back then!!  Can't stand anything around my neck that close!!    :P :P

Thank you for the info, I guess I knew that way back, just had not thought about it until your answer. I still wear a silk scarf when it's cold out, then again with water on it during hay season.  I remember grandpa always wore a tie when going to town, and especially when he got on a airplane.

My son-in-law is a public school band teacher and he wore a tie every day till just a couple of years ago. Tony Saprino dressed up to do nothing. Young guys should dress no better / no worse than the boss. Since my boss is a Jewish carpenter, I have long hair, a beard, and wear sandals.
