Army Truck Build
« on: June 01, 2015, 07:12:25 AM »
New member here with a new build.

My name is Bob age 60 from southern Mississippi. I've been repairing and/or building cars and trucks as a hobby all my life. This is my first Rat Rod build.

I've got this cab from a deuce and a half army truck .... kinda resembles a model a ford truck cab.

This is the look I'm going for which is CutWorm Specialties scratch build.

After I got some seats that I was comfortable with ... literally ... ( I like a nice place to sit ) I found that I have about 16 inches head room so I'm gonna chop the top 6 inches and section the cab 6 inches which will leave me about 4 inches head room.

This cab is about 70 inches wide which is about 10-11 inches wider than the 31 model a which is 59 and some change at the widest point. So I'm gonna narrow the cab 10 inches.

In the process now of disassembly of the cab. I'll keep you posted.

I was thinking army green ... what ya think?

Thanks for all the welcomes. As far as the the big ole army engine .. I'm gonna pass on that .. but my buddy that I got the cab from is putting a 1970 chevy pickup bed and cab on the army frame/ drive train after dropping one of the rear axles and adding some 46" tires. Should be cool too.

Actually .. I'm a 12 valve cummins man and a may build one with that in the future.

Progress:  got the cab stripped down .....

Using a grinder and cutoff wheel and torch I started chopping ...... on the back I cut 5" off each side to give me the 10" narrowing..

Got the fire wall out  and trimmed some other access  stuff off ... ready to  cut the cowl 10" and while I have it chopped in two it will be a good time to section the 6" on the cab.

Oh yea buy the way ..... I found a class a motor home for cheap with a 454 th400 with only 38,000 miles on it. Gonna use the engine , trans, rear and chop up the frame ... but ... it has independent front suspension so I'm gonna have to find or build a straight axle.

Any enlightenment  on building one would be very helpful .  Mostly need help on building the spindles or what kinda spindles should I look for?

I read this article which helps with the science part.

Started sectioning the cab

One corner sectioned 6"

Cut a 1" strip from the piece I cut out as backing to make the weld easier and to fill in any gap in the cut.

Picked up a Winnebago  for cheap with a BBC 454 TH400 ... gonna use the drive train and chop up the frame

Also picked up another RV with a BBF 460 C6 twin I beam .... gonna use the twin I beam to build a straight axle

Noooo ...  I don't mess around .... quit school on the count of recess .. LOL

Gonna get a little slower now because it's getting hot and I'm getting old and that Winnebago is gonna be a job to get it dismantled.

Not to mention other projects I have going at the same time.

But thanks for the reply ... I was beginning to think no one cares.  As long as I see interest I'll keep posting progress.

Making some real progress it's looking a bit lighter now that bbc will motivate it! I'd like to have AC in my garage but for now I'll just settle with a big fan!

Yea a big fan works for now but when July August gets here I may have to work at night on it.

I'm hoping with a mild cam ... correct the fouled OEM cam timing ... an aluminum intake with 750 holley and headers the BBC will lite up the duallies . Should be a site to see

By the way for those that don't know .... during the 70's 80's the big 3 were hard pressed to meet the EPA rules and one thing they did is retard the cam timing .... so the best way to improve performance was to correct that .  A simple way to do that is add a cam kit complete with timing gears and chain.

Been busy stripping the Winnebago ... damn thing wanted to be PITA so I used my buddies CAT ForkLift to toss it around a bit.  Still took a LOT of work to get the cabin off the thing. Finally got the chassis with drive train in the shop so I could get the blue wrench a hold to it.

Ain't much that I needed off the beast compared to all the trash and scrap.

Now I got to get the other Motor Home stripped and in the shop for disassembly cuz I need the twin I beam from it.
