Chrysler new yorker transmission

one of the guys in the club has just bought this,its a 1953 new yorker 331ci hemi motor in it but the transmission has got a clutch on it allthough its auto,somone has said you only use the clutch for starting then it acts as any other auto but it aint shifting down all the time,sometimes it shifts down when you dip the clutch but not allways..anyone got ideas how your sposed to run these proper??
sorry if its in the wrong section but i didnt know where else to stick it.

It's a fluid torque drive tranny.  Google it, and you'll find a ton of information.  It was the predecessor to the Torque Flight that was used forever after.  You can also usually find manuals on Ebay for this tranny, either in print or on DVD/ :D
