Leaf Springs
« on: May 05, 2012, 05:14:10 AM »
:DOk , next question . I have a set of trailer Leaf Springs 1500 lbs PAIR CAPACITY(Standard)
3 leaves, 26" length . My English Ford Thames van weighs less then a VW Beetle . It's getting a V6 . Will these be strong enough to use on the front end with my tube drop axle ?????
I have some brand new adjustable coil over chrome shocks that are for a VW Baja They are a bit long 22 inches fully extended lol but I got them for free .

So with the coil overs and the leaf springs will that be enough support ???

What is this """ stock restoration """ thing you speak of ????

I think they would be enough for the engine weight with the coil overs........

With the coilovers to dampen the trailer springs it should be okay weight-wise.  Trailer springs  short and made to be run loaded, so they may be a little bouncy.  They may seem too stiff, but I'd try them before removing a leaf.  You need to know how much dampening the coilovers do per inch of travel so you can set them up right.  They might not travel far enough to do the job.  Even though they are adjustable, you may wish to build an adjustable top mount too.  Depends on what kind of driving you will be doing.  They may like a little tension with the suspension all the way down. (tires hanging all the way down).  See, if you have (for example) 4 inches of axle travel, and you need to move the shocks 6 inches to get them to stiffen....they won't.  You're breaking new ground, so be ready to adjust it when it's running again.

Free is a good price.
