The cars are old....Me too
« on: March 17, 2012, 01:17:33 PM »
Nice to check out some other cars and trucks.  I have a 51 Ford F1 pickup (a survivor body) I am currently working on.  It is upgraded and safe underneath, but original as possible on top.  I've had Mustangs, a lot of Ford pickups, and 40 years of oddities like a 1959 English Ford Thames van with a 289 behind the seats.  I like rats and original cars, because there are few rules, and lots of innovation.  I believe making a vehicle shiny adds a lot of stress.  Why not relax and let kids and grown ups touch things?  I also like going fast, and I have always believed that the original reason for rods was to GO FAST, and keeping to that is being true to the hobby.

Thanks, guys!  If any of you are headed to the "Back to the 50's" show at the Minnesota fairgrounds, I hope to see  you there.  12,000 cars, with close to 1000 rats/suede/traditionals.

Sky-  My '59 Thames Freighter was very similar to the early Ford Econolines, but scaled down to an 85" wheelbase.  I used an 8" rear, 289 with a C4, and a whopping 8" driveshaft.  I do have pictures, but on a crashed hard drive.  When technology catches up....  I sold it to a man in Nevada about 10 years ago.

Probably right.  I do remember it had a positive ground electrical system, and NO FUSES.  Every wire was a resister wire with no indication as to the amount of resistance.  So I (first) tore out every wire.  Next, I rewired it myself.  First time effort.  Only caught fire 3 or 4 times after that.  It had N-50/15's on 12" wide rims, so most of the rear tires stuck out the sides.  The fronts were little skinny original 15's.  Similar width to a piece of typing paper.  No muffs.  No gauges, No crash protection and very iffy legality.  In short:  Great ride.
