drill press issues
« on: November 05, 2013, 04:56:48 AM »
I have a craftsman drill press thats about 10-15 years old. When trying to notch metal it is just acting sluggish. It also got hungup and the round assembly that holds the bit came sliding out. Theres no screws or anything that holds it up inside. Guess its just pressed inside? Is it time to go shopping for a new press?

take pics of what came out and where it goes. as far as it being sluggish, it might need new belts. i usually have to replace mine every couple years

Thanks. Have to wait to get my new phone for a camera. Should have it by saturday. I'll look at the belt as well.

I bought one at Harbor Freight and when I assembled it, I was surprised to see that the chuck assembly is a press fit on the shaft. I just put it on by hand and it's been working great ever since.

Looks like the center screw that holds the chuck in fell out - the one up the the middle of the chuck where the drill bit goes.

No place for a screw. The shaft does look like it has a slght taper to it

Is the assembly that holds the bit supposed to have this gap. And what is this collar thing that has the ruler thing for? That gap is there after I used the handle to re press it on ,against a wood block.

Don't know about the gap but the ruler thingy is a depth guage if it is a taper was it clean(no burrs) may wanna take a dead blow hammer and tap up on the chuck softly was the gap there before the chuck came off?

Not sure if the gap was there before. Guess i'll get one of them lead filled rubber hammers and give it some hard whacks. If it continues to come apart i'll get a new one.
