Installed a 1974 Chevy Camaro Alternator
« on: August 19, 2011, 01:18:07 PM »
Well i finally did it and it turned out wonderful. After the install, i checked my voltage at the battery and i have a solid 14 volts, with all my lights on. After going through 4 ford voltage regulators, i finally had enough and place another chevy part on the truck. One awesome thing, these alts can be found anywhere in the country.......

No, it's a 3 wire.....Has the battery connection, a #2 and a #1 plug in point......I connected the battery line from the alt, to my ammeter, to my starter solenoid. I connected the #2 wire point to the battery post on the alt. Then i ran the #1 plug point to the ignition switch. I also installed a ground wire from the alt to the engine block. Can't believe how easy it was to make this work on a ford product and how awesome it is knowing i finally have a solid 14 volts.

Good job, this post may answer lots of questions.
My thought is 3 wire is the way to go.

Is there an advantage with the 3 wire over 1 wire?

from what I remember
Easier to buy, cheaper, easier to install.

Cheaper I can understand, My 1 wire I think was about $100. Installing
don't get much eaiser than 1 wire to a constant hot???

Yea this alt was 30 bucks.......To be honest i didn't even know if it would work and i initially went looking for a 1 wire, but the store i was at didn't have any in stock, so i went with the cheapest 3 wire i could find. Figured if i couldn't get it to work, i was only out 30 bucks.....but it worked like a champ.
