To estimate what this "rat rod" paid for his engine alone, here is a Dodge Viper engine current for sale on Ebay for $8000 Buy It Now.  To give the trophy to the guy who spent the most money shows that nothing has changed in the car show hierarchy.  Big money still gets the trophies and very few really understand what a REAL rat rod is.

Rat rods were born out of a disgust with the street rod crowd spending exorbitant amounts of money to build their status-symbol cars. When egomaniacs start spending huge sums to have the most outrageous "rat rod" they are missing the whole point. Is there a price limit on rat rods? YES - I can't name a figure, but I know that an $8000 engine takes it out of the rat rod category no matter how rusty the body.

The question is, how will the REAL rat rod crowd respond to this invasion of their hobby by the overly-monied copy cats? Will they invent a new hot rod genre? What will be the next phase that the innovators invent that the rich show-offs scramble to try and throw more money at?

Where is the cut off and where will it all end. A viper for power takes it out of the general listing for rats.
