RVSR Show, Medford, OR USA
« on: January 15, 2013, 06:44:40 PM »
It's official: the Scrap Rod is no longer a rat rod; it is a SHOW CAR   ;D  ha ha.

I applied to an indoor car show Feb 9-10 in Medford, Oregon and - to my amazement - was accepted!  This is surprising because this show has historically been for finished cars, ie "shiny," and has excluded rat rods.  Evidently their standards are relaxing, or they are conceding that the popularity and legitimacy of rat rods is undeniable.

Whatever the reason, I am honored to be included in this prestigious event.  Here's my acceptance letter:

That is awesome. Glad to see some shows are starting to get openminded about our rides.
Love building rat rods, driving mustangs, and building websites.

Yeah, I'm ambivalent about gaining mainstream acceptance.  I kinda miss the unsafe, anti-social, outlaw image of rat rods. Maybe if I act obnoxious enough, I can get rats kicked out again. Do you think doing donuts on the show floor would do it?   :P

quick, make the car show display rope stanchion's, get out the do not touch signs, and start waxing the undercarriage.
Congratulations, yours will look good in a "all clean" show.

Today was setup day at the Rogue Valley Street Rods 2013 Charity Car Show.  I had a 60-mile drive to get there in February temperatures with no windows and no heater.  Judging from the dozens of trailers in the lot, I was the only car that drove in under its own power - and most of them only came across town!

I was a bit surprised to see that, of about 100 cars, I am the only rat in attendance. This event is still very much about shiny cars. However I did notice one tuner car so evidently the show committee is allowing one token representative of each automotive genre, and I am the "token rat!"  Actually I think this is great; it will give the public new insight into hot rods - they don't have to be Easter eggs!  I left the bugs on my windshield and radiator and put my "show accessory" on the seat (see pic).

Here is a view of the pavilion from the participant's loft (free food for all entrants!) with the Scrap Rod in the foreground. The area shown is about 1/3 of the cars.  Saturday and Sunday every inch of this will be jam-packed with spectators.

Most of shows I go to don't have a rat class and the organizers look at you like somebody passed gas ,,,but all the spectators gather around the rats and take pictures.  That speaks volumes....

Good weather today, so the place was packed, two overflow parking lots full too.  I had to wait for crowds to clear just to take the photo below.  Ha ha, I'm sure that my truck got more attention PER DOLLAR SPENT than any other car in the show!   ;D   The dog poop on the seat is always a big hit with kids - they see it, then run grab their parents, pointing at it with glee.  I can't expect to trophy among this collection of high-dollar cars, but my car stands out among the chrome crowd and I'm proud to represent rats.

Had a nice drive back from the show today, 60 miles in sunshine and relatively warm temperature. No trophy, just a sponsor's plaque.

Here's a pic of me driving on the Interstate taken by my wife following behind. Also a video of the event. I will warn you, it is painfully boring except for the 6:57 mark!
