Is that the original ford alt? If so, i would move to a chevy 3 wire alt. With that, you can run your wires just like this: On the chevy alt, the upper hole may need to be drilled a little larger to accept the top bolt, but the system works perfectly......

Not sure your full set up, but here are two diagrams that cover the basic wiring set up for the alt......NOTICE IN BOTH DIAGRAMS, There is a DEDICATED GROUND WIRE! Since every electron your vehicle produces or consumes with have to be produced by that alternator,
GIVE IT A DEDICATED 10 Ga. Ground Wire!

This is what I have so far , I never even thought about a solenoid in the loop . This is the first time I have tried wiring any system in and I am pretty sure it will be the last . Not that I am not having fun there just is more to this than I first thought . But I will get it done and hopefully it will look pretty good .

The images i attached are your most common wiring for chevy alts............LMAO on the loss of fun in wiring, that is where most people give up and sell their builds. Just keep plucking away and when you get it running, you'll be a seriously happy guy.

The longer the distance, the thicker the cable should be. Trunk-mount battery kits usually use 2-gauge, but rat rodders always like to overdo things so I use 00. Your welding lead sounds ideal.
