1951 chevy 6400 2 ton rat [pic heavy]
« on: August 28, 2014, 02:04:21 PM »
I just got (8-11-2014) a 1951 Chevy 6400 2 ton with a 235 inline six and 4 speed trans. It has a 2 speed rearend with a hydo dump bed on the back. This will be my first ever build, first ever owning one, and once I'm done me first ride in one. I will be using basic tools because that's all I have. I set a $3000.00 budget and spent $1500.00 on the truck. I hope I can get it done. I have lots of ideas and most of them will not be done do to knowledge and budget. I could see out some of these cars can get out of control and cost lots of money.

Cleaning up a little

Out comes the front axle

I wanted to use the front springs but the bushings on the drivers side where shot so I got these from Napa. I've start the mock up here.

I'm not that good of a welder in fact I've use my welder a hand full of times so please be nice of my welding job.

So it was time to get the front setup so I had to cut the rear to set the ride height and get it level.

How it sits as of today. I still need to flip the order of the springs, hook up the radiator, run new brake lines and finish the steering the front will be about done. I haven't done much on the rear yet but its coming.

With the very low geared rear axle I went back and for as to what to do. With factory setup I don't think it would have made it up to 55mph without blowing up. I really like the 2 speed rear so I would like to keep it. Even if it has 6.13:1 and 8.10:1 gears. I've decided to go with a Borg-Warner T-56 transmission. It should do something like this with the rear axle on the high side.

3.78:1= 1st gear=18MPH @ 3500RPM
2.18:1= 2nd gear=30MPH @ 3500RPM
1.42:1= 3rd gear=46MPH @ 3500RPM
1.00:1= 4th gear=65MPH @ 3500RPM
0.72:1= 5th gear=90MPH @ 3500RPM
3.76:1= Rev gear

I should have no problem cruising around at 65 mph @ 2500 rpm's in 5th gear.

As I said at first I want to use as much of the original truck as I can, so I cleaned up the lights and put 12 volt bulbs in them.
