I have put bigger truck lugs, and nuts on car axles for racing, weld em up on the backside.
I can not say this was safe and well balanced at all, need to messure to make sure you have enough  room on the outside.
Would encourage you to seek out a machine shop, and ask them, mine was a back yard job, but I did have big nuts.  ;D

hard to drill that stuff.

Just remembered s couple of things,
I was working on a race car, having a bad oil seal on one either side was not a big concern I ran an ext a fill tank to keep it refilled.
I was elongating the holes, not changing pattern, center of hole stayed the same.
I have used adapters to change bolt patterns available at "Speedway" and others, have used em on 60 Pontiac (big car) going from 5" to 4 3/4" worked good, would suggest these for what your doing.

I have called every place speedway / jed's all over the enter net no one seems to make a 4 1/4 to 5 of course they could make one for about 300 for 2 . I do have a couple more things to look at before they get drilled out . I have been looking for a mustang 5 lug out of a fox body . they had the ceppers on them made from 1979 to 1987. I have some time before I need them

while building my 27
i used a truck front end and a car rear
that gave me 2 different axle widths and 2 lug patterns
my rear was narrower than the front  by 2 inches
a pair of adapters made the lug pattern the same all around and at the same time added the 2 inches needed to make both axles the same width.
pretty slick
they look cool too
red anodized.
