27 chevy p/u
« on: February 13, 2012, 08:18:31 AM »
howdy folks
ford 302 unmodified
c6 3 speed tranny
front axle from 64 f100
9" rear from god knows what
chopped 6" and channeled 4 "
boat seats from wal-mart
speedo from 40's  chevy big truck
holley 2 bbl carb
bed from 60's pickup
i hate sanding so unless something drastic happens.
the roof will never be perfectly smooth.
i have hundreds of photograhps of this build.
so if there is something specific you want to see.
just ask and i will be glad to post it.

since the front is a truck and the rear is a car i had two different bolt patterns.
these spacers made the rear axle 2 inches wider and made my bolt pattern the same on all 4 corners

everybody likes before and after pics
there is about 60 feet of 1" square tubing in that cab.
replacing all that wood was a chore.

since my best gal doesnt like being cold (i dont either)
i installed a 28000 btu heatercraft heater in it.
and am in the process of insulating the cab.
i am going to put 1" rigid foam insulation board in between the ribs of the skeleton and then cover everything with black or grey carpet.
i have a  sheet of 2" rigid insulation for the roof.
the sun here in the desert will cook you in the summer.
and a black car needs all the help it can get.

the way the steering is set up is contrary to the generally accepted way of doing things.
but it seems to work just fine.
no scary bumpsteer etc.
the arm was ground about 50% of the way through and built up with welds.
plenty strong.
sometime i would like to either reverse this box or get another one so i can easily put different exhaust on it.

i went shopping for inside door handles yesterday.
no luck yet.
and i am waiting for the window channels for the doors as well as the little metal clip that holds the plastic speedo gear on the cable.
i have an idea for window regulators that i will post pics of when i am finished.

yep
many happy hours of tinkering.

I agree on the New Mexico sun  :(  As for insulating , use spray in insulation crack and crevice filler for the awkward spots .  :D

i work at a senior citizens center
i figured out why old ladies dig my car so much
it reminds them of what the young restless soldiers were building when they came home from service at the end of ww2

here is a vintage photograph from the 40's
see the resemblance?

got the plexiglass in the doors and used long strips of adheisive tape velcro as window regulators.
it works very well and was dirt cheap.
i got tired of having to reinvent the guts on these doors.
now i am looking for jute carpet padding as a noise damper/insulating material to put in the doors etc.
use some spray on glue and get busy.
at this rate i will have this car dialed in by spring.

once i get the insulation installed.
i am covering everything with black carpet.
that will add a bit of deadening/insulation itself.
a lot of guys say they want to hear the throaty roar etc.
but between the incredible wind noise
the rattles and squeaks
and the engine
i cant hear myself think!
eventually i would like to have music in this car.
just because it looks barebones/old school
doesnt mean i cant have a heater ,tunes and be comfy.
