Hardened steel valveseats changeover in a 59 flattie..
« on: December 20, 2011, 06:26:51 AM »
Hi all! for my 59AB I was planning to put new valves inthere, without the split guides.

having steel seats allready (but they look like runover donuts) I had some questions about replacing them.

my old man told me to locally heat them up with a fine blowtorch and let it cool off tho shrink the rings and they would come falling out?

anyone has some experience in this?

It's my own opinion, by valve seats on these should be done in a shop. Allot of times they will remove the old seats, machine the groove the seat sits in, then they will dry ice the seats, place em back in and as they warm up they will get tight again. After that, they will normally do a regrind on your valves, like a 3 angle......Your dad might be right as far as heating em up, because you can do this with stuck bolts.......but if you mess just one up, you'll end up in a machine shop anyways....Not saying let them rebuild the entire motor, but atleast let them replace the valve seats......Just my .02

good tip, perhaps I could combine it with the chemical cleaning of the waterjacket.. you just don't seem to get it all out.. some described it as 'Gremlins in the jacket'

I do hope the cleaning won't get the original paint off, I'd love to keep it on..
half rust half green, a pair of fourties edelbrockheads  and a superdual intake mmmm lovely thoughts..

but I'd rather clean a public toilet than to paint the block shiny red or something..

Not sure if the cleaning will leave the original rust color, but if not. You could always buy some brown paint and some paint that is close to what the other color is. Lay down some brown, the shoot the other color sparingly around the motor, do a little wet sanding and it will look rusty as hell. If you look at some of the pics of my 47 rat rod, where i chopped the top, that's what i did to keep with the original patina.....

the rust will come back, but the pieces of color perhaps won't?
not quite shure about the brown paint, too much work  :D
Belgian weather will help get it back in no  time!

that reminds me of the sand in the chassis.. hah

the paintingtech is cool art, especially new painted and old looking things like logos and so on.
I'd love to have a semi washed away '35 on the doors
