Saturday at the KKOA
« on: July 27, 2013, 04:40:28 PM »
There were over 2300 entrants this year. I tried to pick the rats that are not your run of the mill rat. In a way rats are getting a lot like most hot rods. The same old cookie cutter. Anyway that is my take on it.

I love that green one.

And yes, rats are getting as formulaic as glass-bodied deuce roadsters. Last night I saw a Model A sedan thread on a rat rod forum where virtually every car looked like a "Sailor Jerry" clone. One reason is that the internet exposes us to cars at a such a rapid rate that the genre spreads quickly and becomes repetitive faster than ever before.

When EVERYONE tries to be different they all end up being the same   :-\

So true. Even with the customs, unless your last name is Barris, Masterson, VooDoo Larry, but for the most part just walking around and looking at all of the Mercs, which was around 20, they are starting to lose there individuality. There are maybe 5 that I feel that are above the norm. You even take the Iconic 32, and how many stand out in a crowd? I look for the lonroof and more door's to really come into there own place in the kustom/hot rod world. Which to me is about time. I have had mine what 10 years now.

I agree, they are. I too love rats that are built with thinking out of box.

Hope you don't mind me quoting you oldskool49, but it brings up a question:

In the shows that all of you RRN members have attended this year, what if any, new trends are you seeing in rat rods?

Are there new developments or is the genre perfected?

The one item that stands out to me has been the use of round tubing, exhaust 1.5 or 2". Have seen it in 2 or 3 this year. When you look close they all are basically the same.
