welding question, just wonder'n
« on: May 01, 2011, 05:13:28 PM »
Safety question,  When welding a newer fuel tank into a older car, is it possible that your wire, or stick may have trouble grounding thru a rust spot? :o and if so might it find it's ground thru the strap your welding, and then the tank itself, causing a small problem? and if so would your face, if still attached, look purdy bad? like this?  :-[

picture of face taken 3 days after minor problem. Car is a 1960 pontiac with no trunk left, dumb guy  ;) was leaning into trunk area to weld lower straps, rear tank, rear filler, just below dumb guy's left shoulder. tank had maybe 1 cup of fuel, but plenty of fumes. brand new Speedglas welding helmet (always wanted a good one) now look's kinda like this.

Some advantages to being a rookie welder. I would take that job to a pro.

Agree, dumb thing for someone to do, just kinda put it out there to remind everyone to be safe or else things can go boom.

Ive welded gas tanks. 1 of 2 things you should do is 1) THE SAFEST- remove the tank completely, weld your area, then replace the tank. OR 2) fill you tank wit fuel or if it's empty, water, then you don't have a grenade somewhere close to you. samething when you are welding the tank it's self.

You are very lucky , gas tanks are dangerous and that could
Have been worse.  I have welded on tanks with no problems but each
One is different  and I don't like welding on or around them but sometimes
It's necessary so I wash them out with soap  run water thru them
And then fill with eater ad much ad possible then you can shoot co2
Into the leftover space  and leave no air  to mix. But I am glad your ok.
If you want to see some crazy stuff look up gas tank welding on YouTube.

At one time or another I would guess, most of us just go to work on something without thinking,,,, or only thinking, nah, thing's never explode, jack stands don't slip, that metal I just cut isn't that hot, I thought the parking brake was on, that horse won't kick, ect. ect.
I was thinking these photo's might  cause a few of us to pause,,,,,,,,,,,then do it anyway.
