Rochester quadrajet carburetor Question. ..
« on: January 20, 2016, 02:21:03 PM »
Hello all,  my dilemma is as follows ive got a 74 quadrajet and for some reason the secondaries don't activate the air lock out pin then holder of secondaries metering rods at open throttle.  I rebuilt this carburetor my, first rebuild ever.. maybe something fell out Like a cam or something that engages the secondaries

The green rod doesn't even touch metering rods the next picture is another carb I borrowed and has a red plastic piece it's also different rochester carburetor too. Please help, can I buy that piece some where ? Ordo I have to  buy a junk carb..?

The cam is missing from your carb. It raises the secondary metering rods out of their seats.  The secondaries on all Q-jets are vacuum operated.  If the secondaries open and the metering rods don't raise, the engine will bog.

There are a number of cams available and different size metering rods as well. The Q-jet is actually very tunable if you know how to do it, and in many applications will greatly outperform the average aftermarket carb.  This includes the Edelbrocks and many Holleys, but the good info is not readily available.

I know a couple of guys who are wizards with these. I ain't too bad myself, but I fall back to them when I have problems. For a stock or mild street car I do okay. For a street driven car, there isn't a better carburetor out there!!

If you want, I'll put you in contact with my favorite Q-jet guy. He's in Nashville and is a well known drag racer.

Ok, fine tuned quadrajet missing some pieces,  put a loner carb on started fine.  But to much gas pressure. So ordered a gas pressure regulator. Looks like these carbs like around 3 to 5 lbs of pressure.  Let you know what happens. .

Q-jet like lots of flow and not much pressure.  I think max I ever used was about seven#.

I'll jump in and agree, Quadrajets can be super performance, and mileage carbs, just have a bad reputation. 3 to 7 pounds pressure is what I feed them.
