Hoping to find 28-31 Tudor while I'm Building my Motor
« on: June 13, 2011, 07:54:37 PM »
Decided to start my first Rat with the engine. I purchased what I was told were 2 49-53 Ford flatheads with the transmissions. Was  kinda disappointed with the first motor everything was burnt off to remove this motor(shifter, emergency brake, driveshaft, crossover pipe, etc). The first motor has a 6 blade fan which I was told was optional on heavy duty setups? The transmissions is a 4-speed and has a PTO shaft( may be fairly common no idea).  We pulled the heads on the the first motor cylinders looked good from best we can tell but haven't been able to turn the motor over yet. It has been rebuilt 30 over pistons but no Merc crank.
When we picked-up motor number 2 it wasn't exactly what I was told. However no let down actually hoorah for me. This motor was in F-2 and had to be pulled and nothing was burnt off getting it out. This one is also has a 4 speed trans. It has a rebuild tag like many flatties do Cyl .060, Main .010, Rod .010.  Kicker was this motor has Mercury heads and yes it is a Merc crank also. Plus the guy threw in all the extras breather, driveshaft and almost new crossover pipe. So I feel like I did good considering I got both motors for $500. Haven't done to much with it lately working on removing the valves and have plans of sending the cam to http://www.camtechniques.com/index.html to be reground. Based on what I've read alot of people like the Literio L-100 so that's my plans. So for now that's where I stand.

You have a good start there. Sounds like it will be a fun ride when it all comes together.
Good luck finding the right body...

Well I haven't done much as far as the motor goes lately but I did find myself a nice B'day present. Heading to Oklahoma tomarrow after work to pick-up this 1930 tudor. Will post some more pics this weekend after I get it home.

This is kinda re-post of pics but made it home safe with the car as I mentioned in another post. Got it unloaded now where to start. Need to kinda set a motor and trans in it to get an idea of how its gonna look as is, but I'm pretty sure we'll end up cutting the front of the frame off completely way to much kick-up for me. Will update as things happen.

So really haven't done anything since I brought the sedan home. Did finally get the valve and valve guides out what a pain in the ass would hate to know what it would be like on one that was froze up. Anyway got the cam out and packaged should go in the mail tomarrow for a regrind from http://www.camtechniques.com/index.html  I'm going with an old grind it's a Literio L100 cam .375 lift, 270 intake/260 exhaust.

Here's a few pics boring pics Pipe bomb or Cam shipping container?

Getting parts ready for the vat this weekend also ordered my timing gear, valve springs, and a set of rings as well as rod, main, and cam bearings yesterday. Slowly but surely the heart of my project is coming together.

Tested, as you know those flatheads are prone to overheating. We installed an electric fan and ordered high flow waterpumps from Kanters Auto Parts, a little pricey but the Mercury has no overheating problems any more...I also installed a water temp guage for both sides of the engine just to keep a close eye on the temps, it has me running scared now, hate overheating problems...but keep us informed when you go to rebuilding, I am very interested in watching the build on this rat... :)

Yeah definitely planning on running an electric fan and as far as the water pumps I've only looked at the ones Speedway carries so far.

I posted a link to Kanters a while back so check them out. they also have the complete gasket sets for the flathead.
