1964 Chevy C10
« on: February 15, 2013, 10:02:05 PM »
Time to get my old truck back on the road. I got this truck in 1990, it was blue and had a .060 327 with a turbo 400. We restored it, I drove it through highschool with an 11:1 comp 327 in it, join the Army and my dad put a 406 in it and started drag racing it. I got home from the Army in 97 and raced it some. Pulled the 406 to put in our Nova and built a roller 305. I parked it about 12 years ago and time has took it from there. Today I got it pulled around to the garage. Going to put my TH350 with 2600 stall behind a LM7 Alum. block 5.3L, with some goodies for nitrous. Hope get this set in the truck tomorrow morning, and slowly start wiring in my MSD 6LS ignition. Running a Holley 750 on top of the Edelbrock Victor Jr intake. Should run alright in the heavy chevy once I put some more gears under her. When I upgrade to disc brakes I also swapped out the rear end with a 5 hole 12 bolt that sports some 3.08 gears. Not real sure on what color I will be going back with on it. I have always wanted it Black Cherry  :P we'll see.

This picture was taken back in 94.

Bringing it home from setting at my dads shop for years.

Had to stop and get a tire put on the trailer, the old chevy is heavy.

Pulled it around today after putting on some tires that hold air.  ;D

Motor all ready to install.

This is the motor after I swapped the heads and cam.

05 Chevrolet SSR, with rear sump oil pan kit on it. Had to drill out the block and install a oil dipstick tube.

Got the motor put in, its just sitting in for now. Got to cut a small notch in the pass side frame to clear the exhaust then its good to go. These old C10s had two places in the frame for the motor mounts to go, this one has always been in the rear holes to keep the weight to the rear. I had to move them to the front to work with the LS mount adapters. But with the aluminum motor the truck wont even know. This is already the lightest set up I have had in the truck and may possible be one of the strongest.  Its sitting low in the rear till i get a trans mount on it.

So you will be running this motor carbureted, not with the original electronics?

Yes it will be carbed, I have a MSD 6LS ignition that will run the coil packs. Thanks, be wanting to get this truck back on the road for some time. Ive made alot of memories in this thing. I still have some brake work to do once I finish with the motor install. Should be fun.

Wow, that's cool. I didn't know you could do that. Will it work for other EFI engines?

Here is some info on the controller.

MSD 6LS Ignition Controller for LS1/LS6 Engines using a Carburetor Pt # 6010 (for 24 tooth crank trigger). The 6LS and 6LS-2 Ignition Controllers can now be installed on EFI or carburetor equipped engines. While it may seem blasphemous to some, putting a carburetor on a GM Gen-III V-8 is a great option for those wanting the advantages of the aluminum small block without the headaches of wiring a modern EFI system. The controllers allow you to map a timing advance curve with MSD’s easy-to-use Pro-Data+ software. Other programmable features include a two-step rev limiter, a vacuum advance curve for cruising economy and even a step retard in case you want to add a little nitrous to the mix. The 6LS is designed for LS1/LS6 type engines with a 24-tooth wheel, which can be identified by its black harness connector. The 6LS-2 is designed specifically for the LS2/LS7 and its 58-tooth wheel, which can be easily recognized by its gray harness connector. Both of these compact ignition controllers fit with matching factory connectors for a direct installation. Only a handful of connections are required; the coils, crank sensor, MAP sensor and the cam sensor. You’ll have your carb’ed LSX running in no time!

Features; Runs a carbureted LS engine without complicated EFI hardware Map a timing curve using Pro-Data+ software Programmable two-step rev limiter, vacuum advance curve and step retard Direct plug-in to factory components Programmable via a PC through MSD's Pro-Data+ software

The stock heads on these LS motors flow better than most of your entry level Aluminum SBC heads.

Cleaned out the truck today, found a place to mount my MSD box. Decided that im going to get this thing running before I work on the 53 anymore. Need a few more parts and it will be ready to fire up. Ill be starting on the body and suspension after its running. Already have some rocker panels ready for it. Im thinking of going with PorterBuilt for the suspension and bags. This is the only vehicle that ive been able to hang on to for the last 23 years time to make it awesome again. I see a color change coming to it too.  ;)

Great shape actually. If things work out and we come to an agreement he will get my 29 Tudor and I will get his 69 C10 and some cash. The cash will go to getting a rolling chasis for another model A or T and starting over.

OK, its been a long time on an update. Really not much to update. I moved to a house without a garage which makes me a shade tree mechanic again for now. I decided to pull the LS motor back out and go with the motor ive wanted in here for 20 years, a 402BBC. I have all the bottomend ready to build. Have some bare large oval ports, but am trying to land some RHS Aluminum heads  instead. Anyone got some BBC valvetrain laying around? I have also decided to change the color completely to blue and white like my 68 C10 was. The Blue/White combo gets compliments everywhere I would go. But the main reason is that my 6 yr old daughter loves the blue and is mad about me selling the 68.

Yanked out the LS and have it on the stand now. I swapped the carb setup for a LS6 setup complete with ECU and harness. I will be putting that setup in my 95 LWB S10. I have a 402 BBC that I am building for the 64, but for now I got a 305 from my dads shop and stuck in it just to have it driven.
