Okay, on an 1157 bulb , you have one pin lower on the bulb and one that is higher up on the bulb . The bulb only fits in the socket one way, which pin would lead to the brake light part of the bulb , the lower or the higher pin? I know its kind of a stupid question, but i can't find any info on this. When i use a 12 volt battery, no matter what i do, i can only light up the top filament, but not the lower, so i can't figure out which wire to connect too for brake/turn and taillight........
-
The pins are only to guide the bulb into the socket correctly. The 2 bumps on the bottom of the bulb are what your looking for...
-
aight, i will go out and see if i can match the bulbs on the bottom to the filaments.............
-
older socket? check to see if power gets from wire to contact inside socket, and check to make sure bulb is good, then ya should be good. socket must be grounded to work.
-
I took an old set of lights off an old fire truck and converted them from 1156 to 1157 bulbs........but i bought cheap bulbs and the wires from the sockets i bought, are both black wires.......being this truck is being built from scratch, i was hoping to make the correct connections the first time, instead of having to go back once i get the entire truck wired, and redo wiring.....I plan on going out today and buying some better bulbs......

Ya might try hooking up a set of jumper cables, to "test" your wiring socket before you spend the big $, black (ground) grips the socket housing, causing it to be grounded then stick a bulb in the socket and touch each wire red "hot". if working each should light an bulb element, if not, pull bulb hook red to one then wire then other wire and test each terminal inside socket for power. Don't mean to be to basic, just sounds like your stuck.
-
I did try that last night.......but i will pull a bulb from the other side and test like you suggested.
-
If bulb still does not work, test for continuity (power) gett'n to each terminal inside socket, old ones pull loose. remember to ground socket, if still no power, replace socket. If still no power, buy insurance for it and push outside.
-
lmao............
-
one wire supplies brake/turn, one wire light, both wires should do something, ground supplied by frame (or jumper cables) I suggest fire insurance, with low deductible.

Sadly i was working with a bad bulb. The small filament was shot, but my eyes are bad enough even with glasses, i couldn't see where the filament was broken. I held it in front of my halogen lamp and could see it. Tried a new bulb and bam, i am on my way through the wiring harness........rear is wired, headlights are wired, now i am working around in the cab...........thanks for all the help guys.
-
Iv'e had em for years, and I don't remember only goes in one way. If your wires or contacts have been taken apart put a ground to it run a hot to one wire and then the other and see which one is taillights, the other one is brake/turn.

The guy that reopened this thread is a spammer. Going to take care of it right now. Thread is over 5 years old.

Are you grounding the socket? The two wires on the bottom are for input power only. Somewhere on the socket is a tab that is metal that should be the ground. Hook your negative to it. Then try both wires and it should do one bright and one dim

I got it figured out back in 2012. Appreciate the input.

Guess I should have looked at the dates :o
