Motor mount idea
« on: July 06, 2011, 12:28:33 AM »
This is a sketch of an original 49-51 Ford/Mercury Flathead V8 motor mount....I am wondering how to go from this to using an old piston rod as a motor mount...have decided to use a Ford flathead with the Mercury crank. My dad and I have all these flathead parts lying around so I see no reason spending money on a sbc. I have experience putting them together and NOTHING, in my opinion, sounds better than a flathead. With the Mercury crank I can gain the extra .25 inch of stroke and thusly MORE power. But I want to use a unique mount...Can it be done??

i also know that the rods are the old H-type...I just wonder if I welded 2 together if it would help strength wise?....I know Grey beards has to have an idea on how to accomplish this feat.... :-\

Building the flathead

I have a set of old school Edelbrock heads and an old school Offenhouser intake for a dual set up and the Stromburg 97's...any ideas on more power? I want to keep it 50's style upgrades. I am doing this one completely alone. I have always built these cars with the old man but not this one...So I will be asking a few questions on how people on here would go about building my "accessories", such as the motor mounts.

I figured it out two rod facing opposite ways and welded together....then a poly motor mount bushing on the engine end so the mounting bolt can run through it and hold it in place

I am having trouble picturing this in my mind , are you talking about using the rods as stands in a verticle position or laying on thier sides ? I first did mine with verticle piston rods and trimmed the width of the wrist pin and used a through bolt through the wrist pin at the engine side of the mount and the "big end " attached to the frame . Am I wrong in thinking you are talking about using the big ends of the rods to support the cushion part of the mount and the small end of the rods to connect to the frame laying on thier sides , or am I totally lost ?? let me know

You are correct in the way I was thinking of doing this . Do you think I would need to weld two rods together to make a double thickness or would a single rod be strong enough. And I guess my idea has been thought of before...lol

I have never seen one done this way  , I think if you triangulate it from the bottom of the frame to the mount cushion it will work well . sorry about the crappy artwork  , my drafting skills are lacking !
